The mystery in “Bones” Season 6 Episode 2 “The Couple in the Cave” concerns, as the title suggests, two skeletal remains in a cave at a national park, hence the involvement of Booth and Bones.
But the mystery was not the most interesting plot in the “Bones” episode. Booth’s squeeze from Afghanistan, intrepid war correspondent Hannah Burley, arrives in Washington, taking a job in the relatively benign environment of the nation’s capital, where they only stab you in the back instead of shooting at you from the front. This sacrifice was to be near Booth.
Bones’ somewhat forced smile while the two smooch in front of her speaks far more than paragraphs of dialogue. Her mouth says she is cool with the fact that Booth has found a new honey. Her expression, like a mask, suggests that she would like to tip Hannah into a wood chipper.
And the sad part about that is that Bones may not even realize it. Mind, something is troubling her. She gives the intern of the week a royal chewing that the old Bones would have spent just a line admonishing him.
Bones has every reason to feel put out. Hannah is not only attractive, but smart, adventurous, and even charming. She compliments the good Dr. Brennan for not having any false modesty, the lack of which she shares in abundance. She even verifies one of Hodgins’ paranoid conspiracy theories. Angela seemed ready to slap him into next week, and it was not the pregnancy hormones either.
The story of how Hannah and Booth met was very romantic, in a kind of action film way. There was Hannah in the Afghan boonies, being fired on by a Taliban thug. The next shot could very well be both a career- and life-ending event. But then another shot rings out, and the Taliban flops down, wounded and incapacitated. (Apparently Booth no longer goes for the kill shot, preferring to wound, capture, and then interrogate.)
Their eyes meet. Cue romantic music, though with an action film counterpoint, and their lips lock. Cut to sex scene in a tent back at the base.
Yes, Dr. Brennan is going to have a tough time dealing with this.
And the mystery? Oh, yes. The girl skeleton was a college-educated marketing exec. The boy skeleton was a migrant farm worker. It seems that they met in AA, a place that knows not cultural or class distinctions.
Was it her boss who killed them? Or maybe it was his angry wife? Or was it someone else?
Watch the episode to find out.
