In September of 2010, Bones season six began airing. I have watched the show since it first started, though in the last few years, I have been getting more and more annoyed with what is going on. I was very unhappy with the 100th episode and I still haven’t watched all of the season finale for season five. My DVR still records the show, and I just got caught up with the first four episodes of season six.
Some of what I will be mentioning will be spoilers for things that have happened in previous seasons of Bones. Read at your own risk. For anyone who hasn’t seen the show, the sixth season is not the place to start.
I started watching Bones because David Boreanaz is in it. I really enjoyed the episodes and thought it was a bit different than the other police or crime type shows. It is still a bit different, but the show is becoming less entertaining to me. Things are starting to follow the some of the same sort of things that have been done in other shows – things that annoyed and irritated me enough that I stopped watching.
During the last few seasons of Bones, more and more little things have come up about Booth and Brennan loving each other while doing nothing about it. I didn’t notice things like that in the first few seasons, and I liked the show fine then. I didn’t even mind when all the little hints at deeper feelings started coming up. What bothers me is the way the writers are dealing with the situation they created. They even had Booth basically bare his soul in the 100th episode, telling her how much he loves her and wants to be with her. Then within just a few minutes, when she doesn’t jump into his arms and profess her love in return, he is talking about moving on and finding someone else. That ticked me off to no end. If he truly loved her as much as he had just said he did, he wouldn’t start talking about finding someone else that fast. He would be more understanding of her issues and be willing to wait a bit longer. That episode honestly almost made me stop watching the show completely. The only good thing that happened in the fifth season is that the mess with Angela and Hodgins was finally fixed.
Season five of Bones ends with the characters leaving to do different things. Booth rejoins the Army and Brennan, along with Daisy, is going off on a year long dig in the middle of nowhere. Angela and Hodgins are going to live in Paris for a year. During the first episode, Caroline manages to get everyone back after seven months to help Cam with a case that is threatening her job. Brennan, who I do think has regressed a bit in the last few seasons, is even more remote and detached once she is back. That worked for the character during the first few seasons and she did show some growth. After six seasons, it is more than annoying for her to be just as bad, if not worse, than she was in the beginning. It is getting harder and harder to like her.
Given how things were handled in the last several episodes of season five of Bones, it isn’t surprising at all that Booth comes back with a girlfriend. He and Hannah, a war correspondent, met when he saved her. That and the fact that they have an active sex life is all that has been shared about the relationship so far. Hannah does come across as nice, though she isn’t exactly believable as a war correspondent. There has to be something more to the relationship since she followed Booth back to the States, but nothing has been shown. So far, there isn’t any substance to the relationship or to Hannah, so it is hard to believe that Booth has really fallen for her. It does sound like he is trying too hard to convince everyone, including himself, that is happy and in love with Hannah. They are barely shown together and there hasn’t been any mention of how she is with Parker. Hannah is a very flat one dimensional character so far, so I really don’t care one way or the other about her. The relationship is obviously yet another attempt to drag out things and keep Booth and Brennan apart longer.
Really the only development for the main characters that I have liked in the sixth season of Bones so far is the fact that Angela is pregnant. I love her and Hodgins together and am so happy that mess has finally been fixed. They are wonderful together. With how things are now, I would rather see them talk about anything than seen Brennan and Booth be a bit awkward with each other like they have been. The cases have been fine, though nothing that great or interesting.
The first four episodes of the sixth season of Bones are mostly entertaining, though things just aren’t right between Booth and Brennan yet. Something is off with their working relationship and that is throwing off the show. If the writers were so determined not to let the characters be together, then they never should have started hinting at it happening to begin with. Then I wouldn’t be so irritated with the show right now, though I think I would still have some issues with Hannah and that relationship. Right now, I just feel like the writers are jerking the fans around with what they are doing. I have read about some things that may be happening in the sixth season. Evidently Hart Hanson has said that someone is going to die. If it is one or two characters, I’ll stop watching the show completely.
So far Bones season six is alright, though nothing that great has happened. I’m honestly not sure how much longer I’ll keep watching and that makes me sad since this show had been a favorite for so long.
