Bowl projections for BCS bowls are now falling in line. The new bowl projections in the BCS bowls are a bit different from last weekend, now that Boise State is out, and conference crowns are almost decided. But in the biggest game of all, it still appears that Oregon and Auburn will meet for the national title. If one of them loses next week, everything is thrown into question. But for now, it appears that the BCS bowl projections are easy to figure out.
If Oregon makes it to the national championship, the Rose Bowl will pit the Big Ten champion against an at-large team. This year, if a mid-major is eligible, they would get into Pasadena – and with Boise State now out, TCU is expected to go to Pasadena.
Currently, the bowl projections have Wisconsin and TCU clashing in the first of the BCS bowls. Yet this all hinges on Wisconsin being ranked higher than Ohio State and Michigan State, and on TCU not making it to the title game. If this happens, then two teams that scored a respective 70 and 66 points yesterday will light up the Rose Bowl.
Meanwhile, Stanford finished an 11-1 season by throttling Oregon State. Until Boise State lost, it appeared the Cardinals would be on the outside of the BCS. Yet now that a spot is available, most believe the Cardinal will go to the Fiesta Bowl, against the Big 12 champion.
The bowl projections in the BCS bowls also changed for the Sugar. LSU was expected to get an at-large bid, but they were defeated by Arkansas yesterday. As such, the Razorbacks could get a Sugar Bowl invitation, with Ohio State also favored to go to New Orleans as an at-large team. Although Ohio State has the same record as Michigan State, the Buckeyes have more star power.
The Orange Bowl is still the unlucky one in the bunch, as they are obligated to take the ACC and Big East champions. The ACC will either be represented by Virginia Tech or Florida State, after N.C. State failed to clinch a division crown. As for the Big East, Connecticut is now a win away from clinching a berth, despite only being 7-4.
Although the bowl projections shifted a bit this weekend, the largest of the BCS bowls still has the same matchup as always. Oregon and Auburn remained on track for a showdown, despite the challenges they faced on Friday. Each team now only needs to win once more to make this official.
If Oregon loses, they will still go to the Rose Bowl, while TCU is promoted to the title game. If Auburn goes down, then Arkansas will probably lose a Sugar Bowl berth as a result.
The current bowl projections look nice and orderly now, but one final upset would throw the BCS, and everything below it, out of wack for good.
