It’s been quite a week for the Palins. Mom Sarah scored the highest ratings ever for a premiere episode on TLC with the debut of her reality show “Sarah Palin’s Alaska”. And now daughter Bristol has moved on to the finals on ABC’s ‘Dancing With the Stars”.
According to MyFox Philly, Sunday night’s “Sarah Palin’s Alaska” premiere on TLC netted over 5 million viewers, a record for a TLC debut episode.
The episode showed the Palin family at home and along the Alaskan terrain, salmon fishing and climbing Mt. McKinley. It also showed Palin with her mom hat on, as she busted teen daughter Willow for sneaking a boy upstairs.
Meanwhile on Monday night, Palin’s oldest daughter, Bristol, performed her best dance yet on ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars”. She and partner Mark Ballas scored triple 9’s for their paso doble. But on a night when all of the stars shined, Palin still remained at the bottom of the judges’ leader board- for the 7th time this season. No matter.
In a real world, Bristol would have been eliminated from “DWTS” on Tuesday night. Palin was among some stiff competition, like pop singer Brandy and “Dirty Dancing” star, Jennifer Grey. But in a shocking upset, Bristol Palin survived the cut and is now moving on to the finals (Brandy and her partner, Maks Chmerkovskiy, who scored a perfect score of 30 for their Argentine tango, were eliminated instead).
So how to explain this winning week for the Palins? Was the TLC debut a fluke, with people tuning in to gawk. And will the ratings numbers hold up?
And as for Bristol, will the Brandy backlash hurt her in next week’s finals? Because let’s face it, even though Bristol could be called the most improved dancer on “DWTS”, she is by no means the best dancer on “DWTS”. Viewers were stunned by Tuesday night’s “DWTS” results, some disgruntled and threatening to quit watching the show.
It’s hard to know what viewers are voting for on “DWTS”. Are they rooting for the underdog (Bristol was the only contestant with no experience as a performer or an athlete)? And does politics have anything to do with this?
Stay tuned. Because, like it or not, in this week’s elections, the Palins were winners.
“Sarah Palin’s Alaska” airs on TLC on Sunday night at 9:00 p.m. ET.
