The finale of season 11 on “Dancing with the Stars” started off with a reunion of the stars that had been eliminated. All of the celebrities, with the exception of Audrina Patridge and Michael Bolton, took to the dance floor for an ensemble performance. Afterwards, Christina Aguilera performed a song from her new movie “Burlesque”.
On to the finalists of the evening. Jennifer Grey, Kyle Massey, and Bristol Palin fought for the trophy all the way to the end. Each couple had to perform two more dances for the finale. The first was a repeat of a dance of their choosing that they had performed earlier in the season. The second was an instant cha-cha dance (where the couples didn’t know the music that they had to dance to until after their first round of dances). The scores from the judges on Tuesday night were added to the scores from Monday night to arrive at a total for the finale.
For the scoring of the first round, the judges ranked each couple by using their 10, 9, or 8 paddles – using each number only once at the end of all three performances. Kyle Massey was the first to perform, and the dance that he chose to repeat was his tango. Interestingly, Bristol also chose her tango as the dance that was her favorite. Jennifer Grey, however, chose the Viennese Waltz, which was the very first dance that she performed on “DWTS” this season.
For the first round of performances, here is how the scores looked:
Kyle Massey – 26 (9, 8, 9)
Bristol Palin – 25 (8, 9, 8)
Jennifer Grey – 30 (10, 10, 10)
The couples drew “straws” to determine the order in which they would dance the second round. It was revealed that the instant cha-cha for each couple would be performed to Pink’s “Raise Your Glass”. While the couples raced to rehearse their routines, Kurt Warner and Rick Fox returned to the dance floor with their partners for a humorous sport rivalry routine. Then, the funny ladies of season 11 – Margaret Cho and Florence Henderson – performed to “Copacabana” once more.
The Situation finally took his shirt off. He hit the dance floor with Karina and two other ladies. Brandy and Maks were good sports and returned for a performance to the song “I’ll Be There for You”. Then, Christina Aguilera sang her grammy-winning hit “Beautiful”.
Round 2 was pretty great, I have to say. All three couples had an excellent cha-cha performance. In fact, Bruno said that Bristol saved the best for last. Here is how the scores looked:
Kyle Massey – 28
Jennifer Grey – 29
Bristol Palin – 27
Consistent with Monday night, the total scores from both nights placed Jennifer in the lead, Kyle in second, and Bristol in third. Combining those scores with viewer votes, the celebrity that lost a shot at the mirror ball trophy was…Bristol! What an unbelievable twist of fate after the unpredictable nature of the season.
With only two stars left, Jennifer Grey and Kyle Massey, the mirror ball trophy was handed to the person who deserved it most…Jennifer Grey! And, Kyle proved to be a very worthy runner-up! The win for Derek Hough made him a three-time “DWTS” champion. Congratulations, Jennifer!
