Bruno Mars is flying high these days. The young singer has been nominated for seven Grammy awards. At age 25, Mars released his first solo album, Doo Wops & Hooligans. After buying the CD and listening to it over and over again, it’s easy to see why Bruno Mars received so many Grammy nominations. Bruno Mars’ nominations include Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
Doo Wops & Hooligans contains 10 songs, including the hit song, “Just the Way You Are”. Each song shows Mr. Mars talent as a singer and displays why so many other artists have featured Bruno Mars on their own songs. After lending his vocal prowess to others, Mars helped pen all 10 of the songs on his CD, and then sang those songs to perfection. I give this CD 4 out of 5 stars, and here is why:
Breaking Down the Doo Wops & Hooligans Song List
“Grenade”- This first song on Bruno Mars CD will resonate with anyone who has ever loved someone only to find out that the person of their affection did not feel the same way about them. It has a simple head bobbing beat that starts the album out right.
“Just the Way You Are”- This song has been a hit for Bruno Mars and has helped lead to his numerous Grammy nominations. It touches the hearts of women who hear it. It reminds you that there could be someone out there that will love you just the way you are. It has touching lyrics and beautiful music that makes you want to take the one you love in your arms and dance.
“Our First Time”- This slow moving song is sung low and sultry by Bruno Mars who is singing to the woman he is trying to seduce. It’s a great date song for a slow dance or background music for an intimate moment with your partner.
“Runaway Baby”- This is the first song on the CD that picks up the tempo and gets your toes tapping. It’s not one of my favorites but it’s catchy.
“The Lazy Song”- The first time I heard this song, I so related to it that I thought it should be my theme song! “Today I don’t feel like doing anything, I just want to lay in my bed. Don’t feel like picking up my phone, so leave a message at the tone.” It’s a perfect song to relax to on your lazy day. Make no apologies for it!
“Marry You”- This is another great song. It has a semi-1950’s sound to it and if you are looking to hint to your boyfriend or girlfriend that you are ready to take the next step just play them this song. It’s a fun and romantic song and Bruno Mars is the perfect singer for it.
“Talking to the Moon”- Though it’s another slow song, it’s a beauty. A heartbroken lover hopes his former flame is talking to the moon just as he is. It’s sad but relatable.
“Liquor Store Blues”- This song features Damian Marley which lends it the reggae sound. It sounds like what happens when Mars figures out his moon struck love is not coming back.
“Count on Me”- This is another of my favorite songs on the Doo Wops & Hooligans CD. It’s got a sweet little beat that reminds me of the Jason Mraz song called “I’m yours”. It’s about true friendship and being there for friends in need. I love the lyrics and the tune; you’ll find yourself singing it long after the song is over.
“The Other Side”- This song features Cee-Lo Green and B.o.B It’s the last song on the CD and it starts out slow but then picks up tempo. I really enjoyed B.o.B’s rap/vocals on this song as it added depth to an otherwise uneventful tune.
