Mainstream wedding decorations can be a budget breaker, so for those thrifty brides looking to save some money on decorating, you’ll need just a little extra creativity and willingness for DIY.
Stay Away From Fancy Labels
Anything that say’s “wedding” on it is bound to be marked up. Your first rule of thumb for budget wedding decorating should be to steer clear of anything marketed explicitly for wedding use. There are many regular party decorations that are just as elegant or nice- but much cheaper.
Flowers, especially when purchased from a floral shop, can run extremely high in price. If you’re set on having floral centerpieces at your receptions, at least consider ordering them from a greenhouse with a cut flower section or even a large grocery store. However, if you’re willing to step off the beaten path, you’ll find there are tons of creative centerpiece ideas that don’t use a single flower. Fill vases with colorful leaves, unique pebbles, sand and shells, or ornamental grasses. Or, use your personality to create a centerpiece that reflects what you love- old books if you’re the academic type, antique coke bottles if you like to collect, even origami if you’re into it.
Double Up for Favors
Favors can get expensive, so consider filling two purposes with one item by placing little bubble containers, pouches of birdseed or flower petals on the tables for your guest- they’ll use them later to send you and your new spouse on your way.
Decide Where to Skimp and Where to Splurge
Having a plan for your budget ahead of time is essential. Decide what’s most important to you, and them skimp a little on other things so you can afford it. If you’d rather have nice linens and chair covers than fancy dinnerware, there’s nothing wrong with disposable plates and silverware- especially if your dinner is buffet style. Know what you have to work with, and then divide it up according to importance.
Use your imagination and think outside the box- sometimes the most unique weddings can be the least expensive. Having to find ways to save money can usually encourage your personality to come out more in the wedding design, and create a more unique and memorable occasion for all your guests.
