Ever since Buffalo Wing University opened five years ago in Fairfax City, VA, its been a major success. This restaurant is located in a strip mall close to George Mason University, and is popular with students and residents alike. There are plenty of reaons for it, but one of the most common I’ve heard is the “buffalo wings” themselves. They are indeed quite good, and you can get these generously sized pieces of chicken for a low cost. In fact, Thursday nights they are 49 cents each, so get yourself a whole bunch of them to watch sporting events showing there. You can get them in a variety of flavors, and the Extra Hot, is more than spicy enough to make you sweat. Stick to the regular hot, as that’s steamy enough, and you won’t be crying as much.
While their wings are quite tasty, I’m a fan of their pizzas. They are much more “gourmet” than franchise operations such as Domino’s and Pizza Hut, and therefore not like a traditional “college pie.” You are going to pay a price for it, as their pizzas are a bit expensive, but quality is what these are all about. A large with several toppings is going to cost you upwards of $15, and a specialty pizza is going to be around $20. The old adage of “You get what you pay for “, is true in this case, and you will enjoy these pizzas spicy sauce, generous portions of cheese, and fresh toppings. They are a perfect meal, to go along with either their pitchers or single bottles of beer.
If you are in the mood for a sandwich, don’t sweat it, as they have plenty to choose from. The best is their “Steak and Cheese.” You can get this as a platter for $9, and its served with fries and a pickle. I really like how this is “almost Philadelphia good”, and its a large sub with generous portions of chopped steak and melted cheese. My only complaint is that the bread is a bit pedestrian, but that’s only a minor grievance, as its a very good sandwich that will allow you to consume lots of booze. Their club sandwiches are huge! You have to mash these down a bit, and if you are a fan of tuna sandwiches, they have the albacore variety. No dolphins were hurt in the process.
For lunch and dinner, this place is fairly laid back. Weekends are exceptionally busy, and at night, it can get a bit “out of hand.” While they do have security on staff, for whom do a professional job, there might be some “fisticuffs” over usually a female during the night hours. I’ve never seen any huge fights, due to security and nearby police intervention, but it is one item you should take into account before going in here. Normal business hours, you won’t see any type of this activity, but as it gets around midnight to 2 am, any bar has these types of activities.
The crowd is young, but there are a few “grey hairs” in here during lunch and dinner hours. That’s because the food is good, and so is the service. The waitstaff are very friendly, mostly college students, and you won’t have to wait long for your appetizer or main course to arrive. There is a traditional bar where you can watch numerous sporting events, but I prefer the booths. They are very comfortable, and some of the ones in the back, have air conditioning units close by. I’d recomend Buffalo Wing University as a fun place to go, especially if you are a college student. Its only a mile away from GMU, and located at 10312 Willard Way Fairfax, VA 22030.
