In “Burn Notice” Season 4 Episode 12 “Guilty as Charged,” Michael, Fi, and Sam start with three problems. First they have to lay hands on Barrett, the evil corporate CEO who finances wars and assassinations around the world.
Next, they have to avoid being killed by their former friend Jesse, who is somewhat peeved at the moment about being burned.
Then they have to avoid being betrayed by Vaughn, who has turned out to be one of the people responsible for getting Michael burned.
A fourth problem arises that they do not need, but have to take on. A drug cartel lawyer’s 5-year-old daughter has been kidnapped by the brother of a client. Make sure the client avoids jail, or the little tyke dies. The problem is the client is so guilty that not even sleazy drug cartel lawyer can get him off.
Just another day on the job for Michael and friends. Spoilers follow.
Snatching Barrett would seem to be easy. The plan is to meet with him at an undisclosed location to exchange the Bible code, but instead lay hands on him, stuff him in the back of a car, and then take him somewhere to sweat him for information, all without Vaughn knowing the details and before Jesse can kill them. They then use the information to get Jesse reinstated, blackmail Vaughn, and maybe remain alive themselves.
But first, the 5-year-old daughter of the sleazy lawyer. A raid on the hiding place with a borrowed submersible doesn’t come off so well. So now they have to get creative. A fake guard, a fake prisoner, and a fake prison van are all that are needed to get the little girl free and unharmed and the bad guys dead or on the run. Problem One solved.
Problem Two concerns Jesse. Fi and Madeline, then Michael appeal to his sense of self-interest. Rejoin the team, help snatch Barrett, and then all is possible. Unfortunately, Jesse’s sense of outrage overrides his sense of self-interest. So, no deal.
So Michael, Sam, and Fi have to try the snatch shorthanded. Things, of course, become unraveled.
First, Vaughn and his men show up where they are not supposed to and a lot of shooting ensues.
Next, Jesse shows up and shoots a bad guy through Michael’s soft tissue. Barrett grabs Michael and tries to make his getaway in a black suburban.
The result is an over turned suburban, a possibly dead Barrett, a possibly dying Michael, and a book code snatched up and carried away by – whom?
And we have just a short time, until November, to find out what happens next.
