As “Burn Notice” Season 4 Episode 14 “Hot Property” begins, Michael is still sore from being shot by Jesse and Jesse is still sore from being betrayed by Michael. Madeline is beginning to get irritated by this soreness, mom that she is.
The list of names of people who burned Michael is apparently being put up for auction with a $5 million buy-in. Michael hits upon the idea of Jesse squeezing his boss, an indiscreet fellow when it comes to mistresses, for five million in soon-to-be-destroyed Federal Reserve money for the op. Sam does the initial squeezing and the man is none too pleased, but is willing to buy Jesse’s silence with funny money.
In the meantime, Fi and Jesse accept a job for a client who says his sister is being held by a Venezuelan who believes too much in two-fisted love. An examination of the Venezuelan’s compound reveals security far too extensive just to keep a 20-something woman under wraps.
This is confirmed when Natalie, who had once tangled with our intrepid heroes over a client list of Barry’s, emerges from the wilderness and shoots the client in the heart. The real MacGuffin in this episode is a chemical weapon that makes other chemical weapons seem like perfume. She had stolen it on behalf of the Venezuelan, and, now, the heat being on, she would like to steal it back.
The alliance is uneasy, to say the least. Funny about having someone try to kill you in turn creating trust issues.
Nevertheless, after an adventurous recon, the team snatches the item, which is in a convenient brief case. Sam carries it off on a route designed to shake off pursuers. Then he runs into an explosive that flips his car, and then Natalie with a gun. Of course she betrayed them, silly. There is, despite what she said earlier, no honor among thieves whatsoever.
Ascertaining that Natalie had gotten intel on them by planting a bug in Michael’s shoes, Michael and company start talking about how clever they were in planting fake chemical weapon. Meanwhile, Fi and Jesse build a real fake chemical weapon, which is secreted in a safe deposit box for Natalie to find.
This all leads to a confrontation with Natalie’s buyers, a release of fake weaponized chemicals, and Natalie being chained up for the authorities. The weapon is delivered to the feds and all is right with the world.
Except now Madeline has it in her head that she will force Michael and Jesse to reconcile or else. Since the or else is not something to be contemplated and since the two have been warming to one another anyway from a couple of shared ops, they readily agree to do so.
