Former president and immortal cowboy, George W Bush Jr. said that one key moment in his life formed his obstinate view on abortion. The event was when Barbara Bush, his dear mother, showed him the remains of a dead fetus in a jar. The fetus was from a miscarriage by the elder Bush. (read report here)
Bush Jr. was a teenager at the time, and no doubt thinking about getting juiced. “There’s no question that affected me, a philosophy that we should respect life,” he told Matt Lauer of NBC.
One: I don’t like it when George W. Bush Jr. uses the word philosophy. Instead of a respectable, meaningful, thousand + year dialogue of slippery questions on the nature of God, man, metaphysics, and epistemology, Bush Jr. has the capability of slamming the word into the ground and squishing out its guts. Or bottling its remains into a jar of Scotch whisky and letting it transform his opinions.
Two: A philosophy that we should respect life? Wasn’t it you, sir, who watched your father strike against Saddam Hussein, watched the heavy casualties of an inferior nation try to defend itself against a flurry of cruise missiles and rolling tanks?
And then you, sir, went and struck Iraq again? Only this time striking to win? Shock and awe? A philosophy to respect life? The words are so uncanny it’s almost like I missed a joke. Were you being facetious?
Maybe Mama Bush should have shown you a torn body of an Iraqi floating in a jar of Scotch whisky and then America would still have a little dignity, a little money, and a lot fewer enemies.
Decision points, I guess.
