Are you looking for quality affordable health insurance coverage for your children? Many families find themselves struggling to afford health insurance coverage for their children in these difficult economic times. The California Healthy Families Program, California’s implementation of the federal State Children’s Health Insurance Program (known as SCHIP), provides health insurance coverage for children who meet income and other eligibility requirements. The California Healthy Families Program covers all medical needs, including regular doctor visits, hospital visits, dental and vision, laboratory tests, and immunizations, among others. There are some important points to understand and consider if you are seeking low cost quality health insurance coverage through the California Healthy Families Program for your children:
To qualify for coverage under the California Healthy Families Program, the child must be under the age of 19, live in California, and be a United States citizen or a qualified resident (legal immigrant residents must have five years of residency to qualify for the program). The child also needs to have been without insurance for at least three months. Additionally, the family’s income must be under a certain limit. For a family of four, their family may qualify if their monthly income is under $4594. For a family of six, the monthly limit is $6153. There are some deductions that families can claim when determining their income, such as expenses related to child support, alimony, employment, and childcare, among others.
There are both monthly premiums and co-payments associated with participation in the California Healthy Families Program. Monthly premiums rage from $4 to $24 per month per child, with a maximum family monthly contribution of $72. The cost of these monthly premiums is determined by the family size and the family’s income. Co-payments are required for some services and range from $5 to $15. There is an annual maximum family out of pocket co-payment limit of $250.
