The Ben Lomond Mountain American Viticultural Area (AVA) is located in Santa Cruz County in California. It consists of 9,000 acres, and was established in 1987. Vineyards were first planted in this AVA in the 1800s, but various challenges have proved almost insurmountable for this California wine growing region. Its high altitude places it above most of the Pacific Ocean fog, so the Ben Lomond Mountain AVA receives plenty of sunlight, but grape growing here has been heavily affected by Pierce’s Disease (a deadly grapevine disease that can devastate entire vineyards), and other issues. As a result, only one winery currently carries wines with the Ben Lomond Mountain AVA on its label. But those wines are really worth seeking out! For more information on the amazing wines of Ben Lomond Mountain and the winery that produces them, see below.
Beauregard Vineyards. This California winery is located in the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA, where they produce some of the finest handcrafted wines you will ever taste, including Chardonnay, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon. It is the only California winery currently producing wines with the Ben Lomond Mountain AVA on their labels. They own or purchase grapes from six vineyards in California, and produce distinctive wines from each area where those grapes are grown.
Bald Mountain Vineyard, located in the Santa Cruz Mountains of California, is the largest of their vineyards, with over 38 acres of grapes, including 9 acres devoted to Pinot Noir. The Beauregard Ranch Vineyards, this winery’s original vineyard, produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Chardonnay and other grapes. It is from these two vineyards that the wines bearing the Ben Lomond Mountain AVA are produced. Other vineyards in the Beauregard Vineyards family are Meyley Vineyard in Bonny Doon, Trout Gulch Vineyard in Aptos, California, Zayante Vineyard in Zayante California, and Hirsch Vineyard in the Sonoma Coast AVA. While Beauregard Vineyards creates outstanding wines from each of these vineyards, below are the Ben Lomond Mountain AVA wines you should try.
Their 2007 Bald Mountain Chardonnay bears the Ben Lomond Mountain AVA on its label, and this is one California white wine definitely worth finding. As its name implies, the grapes that are used to create this wine are grown in the Bald Mountain Vineyard in Santa Cruz. This luscious Ben Lomond Mountain wine has aromas that include caramel and toast, followed by flavors of green apple and spice.
Also try their 2008 Bald Mountain Pinot Noir, (also made from the grapes of Bald Mountain Vineyards in Santa Cruz), which has aromas of cherries and cranberries, followed by flavors of vanilla and raspberries. This California red wine is spiced with fennel and black pepper, with a long dry finish that perfectly complements almost any meal.
Beauregard Vineyards’ 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Beauregard Ranch is another outstanding wine from the Ben Lomond Mountain AVA, with aromas of figs and strawberries, and flavors that include black currants and plums. It is created from grapes grown in the Beauregard Ranch Vineyards. This is a complex red wine that can compete with any California red you care to compare it to, and is well worth seeking out.
