Do you eat when you are stressed? Do you eat when you are nervous? Do you worry that all of this eating will cause you to gain weight or worse has it all ready caused you to gain weight? Here are some tips that hopefully will help you learn how to control this type of eating.
Identify what is stressing you
Is this something you can control? If this isn’t something you can control, you will need to learn how to deal with it a bit better.
Keep your hands busy
You need your hands to eat. If you keep your hands busy, you can’t eat as well. This can be as easy as knitting, typing on the computer, or playing guitar. They key is to just take part in a repetitive activity that will keep your hands and fingers busy.
Keep your mouth busy
Most stress eaters are oral type people. This means that they need their mouths to be busy, as well as their hands. You can easily do this by sucking on mints or chewing sugarless gum. You can even munch on health vegetables and fruits that can keep your mouth busy and help keep you healthy. Another tip is to think about picking from crunchy fruits and vegetables.
Stop and think
Ask yourself are you really hungry? Ask yourself if you really need this snack? If you answered, yes think about a healthy, low calorie snack that might help you. Remember you don’t want to actually starve yourself. You do need to eat and snacks are a good way to keep our blood sugars leveled. Yet, you can do this by choosing low 100 to 200 calories snacks instead of a whole handful of cookies.
Learn what snacks will actually satisfy you without triggering a full blown eating attack. This will vary from person to person. Some people can eat a miniature candy bar and satisfy their craving for chocolate without going over their calorie limit. Yet, some people can’t just stop with one candy bar once they get that taste of chocolate in their mouths. Learn which type of person you are.
Pick a fun exercise that may help you forget about eating for a while. This doesn’t have to be a full blown exercise session. This could just be taking a walk outside and enjoying the fresh air.
Once we learn to control our stress eating, we can quit worrying about gaining extra weight and we may actually take off a few pounds without even trying.
