Recently, I attended an outstanding paranormal investigation at Berry Hill Resort and Conference Center in South Boston, VA in October, 2010. I met three outstanding paranormal groups of North Carolina, GHOSTS of Raleigh, The Heritage Hunters Society, and NCHAGS. I was attending in the capacity of a writer although I am a believer in paranormal occurrences. In attendance with the three groups and myself were Audrey of Mike N Audrey’s Most Music Mornings at WLUS 98.3 FM in Oxford, NC and a reporter with the South Boston, VA News and Record.
The paranormal investigators were proficient, dedicated, professional and respectful, but I noticed a light side to these characters who are so sensitive to and serious about the paranormal. Put yourself in my shoes. I was observing, but I was thinking that ghosts were watching us. A small group of investigators were in a sitting room when Michael of THHS said out loud to any ghosts, “Can you see me waving?” And he proceeds to wave and flop his hand around in the air.
What! If I were a ghost, I’d get mad or at least have a little attitude, maybe – some sarcasm at the very least. “Of course, I can see you waving! Did you think I couldn’t?” But that is the sense of humor of Michael who loves getting a response from those who are not exactly alive in the way we understand living. I admire the technique because he got an answer. On EVP, a ghost answers him with a resounding, very distinctive, “yes”. That is only the beginnings of how the Heritage Hunters Society manages to obtain evidence. Think about it. It is evidence. The voice is on tape. In fact, the voice has to be on several tapes because their were video cameras videoing Michael with the tape recorder and PX Devices. And right after Michael asks, a person not in the room, yet on the voice recorder says “yes”. So it is confirmed. The ghost says they can see Michael when he waves. Ghosts can see people wave and Michael has proven it! Actually, the true evidence is ghosts can see MICHAEL La CHIANA wave. But me, I’m not an investigator, so I can stretch it just a tad – ghosts can see me wave too. Wink.
That wasn’t all I observed while I was there. My mother is a woman with personal energy. Who knows if it is paranormal or not, but this I can say, “strange things have always happened around her” – you, know those kind of things that have a way of moving things along a path you might have been resisting, or that you just missed in pure distraction. So, I’m in a sitting room again and one of those moments was about to happen because my mom started telling the investigators a ghost story about her first love who happens to be my father. Mom’s first love was named Bruce, the same as the last name of the Berry Hill residents. Mom, (also known as Cricket), began her story to Steve Boyette of THHS and his PX Device went crazy. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. And lights lit up. So the thing is beep beeping and flashing red when I look up to the heavens and proclaim: “Dad! What are you doing here?” or something close to that.
Well, honestly, think about it. I did think it was him. My dad was mom’s first love. And what was he doing there anyway? He isn’t my guardian angel – he’s just my father and he didn’t belong at Berry Hill. My voice and face showed the conflict going on in my mind. Steve thought I was upset and sought to make right what he perceived was disturbing me. The PX Device acting up like that was so amazing that it didn’t occur to me that the ghost responded to the name “Bruce” which is my father’s name, but also the family last name of those who lived at Berry Hill. But Cricket did. And so Steve was initiated into Cricket’s energy moments. For him, it was a first. But not for me.
At the end of the investigation, everyone was standing around – Don and Beth of GHOSTS of Raleigh, Steve and Michael of The Heritage Hunters Society and Eddie, Mike and Jeff from NCHAGS, Audrey from WLUS and maybe the reporter as well as Tina Rice-Smith of Virgilina, VA. A ghost decided it loved Audrey and played with her ear with her own hair. This is the story in Audrey’s own words, “Jeff, from NCHAGS, Tina Rice-Smith (the contest winner) and I were standing near the bar in the room adjacent to the sitting room. We were having a casual conversation about places that we had heard were possibly haunted. I had my arm propped up on the bar, but it was not touching my head, then suddenly I felt my hair go into my ear and tickle it. It was almost as if I had taken my hair, twisted it around and tickled my ear that way. It was the strangest feeling, but it was exciting at the same time.” Steve with Heritage Hunters Society got a video of Audrey’s instant reaction that can be viewed on YouTube. Audrey’s reaction says it all. Audrey is a radio personality in Oxford, NC.
Not long after this happened to Audrey, a ghost blew up the back of my neck. I couldn’t help it. I broke out in goose bumps and started to giggle like a school girl. It was funny at the time, but I am a little disturbed that a ghost can make me feel something erotic like that. Reminds me of Demi Moore. Don’t prude out. You thought about Demi, too.
