Over the seasons on “American Idol,” we’ve seen several women judges: Paula Abdul, Kara DioGuardi, Ellen, and this newest Idol judge Jennifer Lopez. Each of these women have had their own personalities, stardom, and emotional investment in the show.
The Idol viewers loved Paula for all her idiosyncrasies. She sometimes rambled and could be be off the wall, but she was loved by the contestants. Paula was Paula and America loved her. She made one final return on Simon’s final episode to say farewell to her friend.
Songwriter Kara never seemed to really gel on the show. She had opinions about everything and usually picked her favorites and judged accordingly. She judged yet she always seemed as if she had something to prove. If this seems slightly harsh, remember, she is no longer on the show. “Idol” viewers just didn’t fall in love with her the way they did Paula. Kara seemed to also push the limits on a family-friendly primetime show.
Ellen is a comedian, talk show host, and iconic in her own right. Yet, could have been another Paula. First, she didn’t have the experience to really be a judge and was honest on that issue. Yet, she pushed the boundaries of a family show with her sexual comments and really made Idol not so very Idol. No matter why she left the show, she’s history on “Idol”, and has already been replaced.
There’s a new lady in town and her name is Jennifer Lopez. Lopez will be replacing both Ellen and Kara DioGuardi. JLo is not only fresh on “Idol” but really can bring her own vibrant personality, her experience, to really jazz up the Idol judges table. She isn’t Paula, and probably won’t try to be. She will be JLo as we know and love her. She has a gentle personality yet has the tenacity to get tough if needed.
Lopez, along with Steven Tyler, Randy, and of course, Ryan Seacrest. Yep, their going back to a three judge format. Not only that, but “American Idol” has brought out the heavy weight singers with careers to back up their voices. These judges are as close to Paula Abdul as Idol fans could ask for. We have a rock star in Steven Tyler. Jennifer Lopez is a actress, singer; well, she’s JLo. What more is there to say?
Season 10 “American Idol” airs in January on FOX.
