Ridge Theatre is putting on a play in Fort Greene. Persephone is a classic Greek myth with a decidedly modern turn in this show being staged at BAM Harvey. Julia Stiles has always won my circle but will she be able to hold her own in this Brooklyn staging?
Persephone, as reported by Brooklyn Paper (1) is “a daughter of Zeus who is stole by Hades.” But we all remembered that, right? Persephone is rescued from Hades but forced to spend half her time there because she has “consumed six pomegranate seeds while in Hade’s control.” While I certainly hope that pomegranate is not the devils tool, it does make a great place to begin a play.
Ridge Theatre and Stiles have had a long affiliation and this version of Persephone looks to be an exciting time. This staging is “based around music, with vocalist Mimi Goese and composer Ben Neill bringing 19th century compositions, contemporary rock, and electronica together for a mystical, emotional, and psychedelic interpretation.”
We’ll have to see if Persephone and Stiles take their turn on the Rialto but this production has a short stint at BAM, October 26-30. Check it out!
