She’s known around the world – not because of her acting these days, more than likely because you just saw her on CNN or were at the grocery store and saw on the cover of ‘Us Weekly’. It’s interesting how someone like Lindsay Lohan, who was once destined to be the next big actress of her generation, is now selling pictures of herself to paparazzi agencies as a way to pay her bills.
But Lindsay didn’t just turn into a tabloid-making-party girl over night. As we all know, Lindsay got her big break in 1998 when she was casted in ‘The Parent Trap’. The film earned $92 million worldwide and from that point on Lindsay, after shooting commercials for Pizza Hut and modeling for Calvin Kline as a kid, finally got her big break in Hollywood. She would eventually release two successful albums, she would star in hit movies like, ‘Freaky Friday, ‘Mean Girls’ and ‘Herbie: Fully Loaded’. We watched Lohan grow up before our own eyes – and we saw her when she was doing good and we saw her when she was doing bad. Unfortunately Lindsay, by the time 2006 came around, had a party girl image and there were whispers in Hollywood that she was always late to the set or hung over from partying the night before. During 2006, while filming ‘Georgia Rule’ she was hospitalized for “overheat and dehydration” and the public may have bought that excuse if Lindsay wasn’t seen out on the town partying the week following up to her hospitalization. In a letter, that ended up on the internet, studio exec James G. Robinson told Lindsay she was “unprofessional” -among other things- and that everyone was “well aware” that she was partying the nights before she would show up to the set. As Lohan usually does, she tried to pretend that she didn’t know what Robinson was talking about. Thanks to the letter the once whispers about her being uninsurable was now a confirmed fact for Hollywood executives. After that Lohan had a hard time getting put into films due her party girl image.
Instead of being seen on movie screens, Lohan became a fixture in the magazines and gossip columns. Awkwardly enough – it seemed that Lohan liked the tabloid attention. In 2007 there were endless rumors that she would tip off the paparazzi about where she was going but then pretend to be irritated when they “caught” her leaving a club or the grocery store. But in 2007 things looked like they were turning around for Lindsay, she was casted in the film ‘Poor Things’ but unfortunately on May 26th, only days away from shooting, Lindsay was arrested for DUI. As she would do repeatedly over the years, Lindsay entered rehab. Thanks to Lindsay and her recent DUI arrest at the time, ‘Poor Things’ halted production, and weeks before production was set to start back up – Lindsay, once again, was arrested for DUI, and again she returned to rehab. Notice a trend here?
After her second DUI arrest Lindsay gave several interviews claiming she had changed and was ready to leave her party girl image behind but days later she was spotted partying and back to her old tricks. It seemed that Lindsay didn’t care that she was jeopardizing her once stellar movie career. Not surprisingly, she was dropped from ‘Poor Things’ due to all of the issues in her personal life. Things would only get worse as Lindsay could only book TV appearances and star in straight-to-DVD movies. This would be a trend that would continue for the next 3 years. In May of 2010 – Lindsay, knowing she had court, decided to go to Cannes Film Festival and party, instead of staying in Los Angeles and await her DUI progress hearing with the judge. The judge issued a bench warrant for Lindsay’s arrest. Over the next couples months she would be in-and-out of jail, court and rehab.
These days Lindsay is back in rehab, reportedly at Betty Ford, and is facing serious jail time for failing a court-mandated drug test (reportedly she had cocaine in her system). Her next court date is set for October 22nd. In a recent ‘Vanity Fair’ article a publicist called Lohan “Hollywood kryptonite”, which describes how most of Hollywood feels about her. The public is hoping Lindsay will finally take responsibility for her actions and leave her party girl image in the past because she does have legitimate talent but who knows what will happen because as we’ve learned with Lohan, just when you think that she finally gets it, she ends up returning to her old ways. It may seem impossible due to her current reputation, but if Lohan will be able revive her career is still unanswered, but we’ll know very soon.
