Wesley Snipes must go to jail, ordered by a federal judge, as reported by ABC. The actor, who failed to pay more than two million in taxes from 1999 to 2001, despite the fact that he made over 30 million dollars, was denied a request for a new trial. Said Judge William Terrell Hodges, “The Defendant Snipes had a fair trial; he has had a full, fair, and thorough review of his conviction and sentence by the Court of Appeals; and he has had a full, fair, and thorough review of his present claims, during all of which he has remained at liberty. The time has come for the judgment to be enforced.” Snipe’s attorney, Daniel Meachum, doesn’t expect the actor to go into custody for at least a week and he says he plans to appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.
The 48-year-old Snipes, born July 31, 1962, made his film debut in his early 20’s in “Wildcats” with Goldie Hawn. From there he was a steady actor, picking up steam in movies like “New Jack City” and “White Men Can’t Jump.” His career culminated with his performance in the “Blade” series, playing a “daywalker” or half vampire. The 5th degree black belt has recently been seen in a commercial for the Total Gym.
But he’s not just reduced to exercise equipment commercials. Snipes is still an active actor, appearing in films such as the 2009 “Brooklyn’s Finest” with Richard Gere, Ethan Hawke and Don Cheadle. Snipes films as of late have not fared well, heading straight to Netflix, but Snipes insists that he’s not on a comeback. “If they want to call it that it’s cool with me. I’ve been steadily working. I’ve been doing a lot of projects around the world and overseas. Expanding that fan base,” said Snipes.
Weezy did it from jail, releasing music that hit the top of the Billboard charts, setting him up nicely once he got out. But Snipes doesn’t have any music to push. He’s an actor who is set to be behind bars for three years. With Wesley Snipes in jail, there will be no action for the star who has become most famous through action films. Snipe will truly have to be a comeback kid, and fortunately for him lots of fans love a comeback story. Will Hollywood give Wesley Snipes in jail an opportunity to create a story after he gets out? That remains to be seen.
