Dog is man’s best friend. Given the proper care and attention, a dog stays by one’s side and loves to participate in activities with their owners. Care of the dog includes giving attention to his health.
Name and Address Dogs need a collar with a tag containing your name, address and phone number. You might think your dog will never get lost, but you can never be too safe. A dog collar and tag increases the chances your dog will come back home if lost.
Fleas The flea causes itching and scratching in dogs. Fleas are the size of a sesame seed and people see them on the skin and in the hair of the dog. Fleas possess no wings and move by jumping. Pills by month or liquids squirted on the dogs back kills the fleas. Let your parents know if fleas are present so they can treat your pet.
Ticks Ticks, about the size of sunflower seeds, are larger bugs than fleas. Ticks carry bad diseases. The tick crawls to get around and bites to take blood. Liquid to squirt on the skin can treat the ticks. Since the blood may have disease, do not pick up the tick with a bare hand. Your parents should treat the ticks if present.
Heartworm Heartworms get into the dog by mosquitoes and end up in the heart making the dog very sick. One can prevent heartworm with a once-a-month pill. Ask your parents about whether your dog needs it.
Allergies Some dogs suffer from allergies with skin allergy the most common. An allergy is something in the environment that can cause an unpleasant reaction and cause redness and bumps on the skin. The dog scratches or bites the area making redness and sometimes a sore with hair loss. If it is a flea allergy, treat for fleas. Pills for itching can help stop the itching.
