Carmelo Anthony trade buzz has persisted all summer. If a Carmelo Anthony trade takes place, whoever trades for Anthony will have a huge late advantage heading into the season. Of course, despite his abilities, the Nuggets still want to let him go, which should say something. Yet after the offseason moves made by other teams this summer, getting another superstar is even more crucial. However, if the latest Anthony trade rumors are true, then a team that’s far away from being a contender will get back on the map.
The New Jersey Nets are in the midst of a massive makeover, after billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov took over the team. They were minor players in the LeBron James race, and are moving into a new stadium in Newark this year, before going to Brooklyn in 2013. However, the team was still 12-70 last season, so they need a big coup to return to relevancy.
A Carmelo Anthony trade could do just that, and be the latest offseason splash for an Eastern Conference team. The current rumors have the Nuggets and Nets leading a four-team deal, with the Jazz and Bobcats also taking part.
If this goes through, the Anthony trade will send the Nuggets’ All-Star to the Nets, who would then send third overall draft pick Derrick Favors to Denver. Meanwhile, the Nuggets would take Utah’s Andrei Kirilenko, while the Nets would deal Devin Harris to Charlotte, and the Bobcats would then send reserve Boris Diaw to the Jazz. The Nuggets would also get a 2012 first-round draft pick from the Nets, who acquired it from Golden State.
These are obviously complicated proceedings, with the Nets likely set to get the immediate short-term victory. According to Yahoo Sports, the talks hinge on Anthony signing a contract extension with New Jersey – but they claim he is inching towards that decision. Meanwhile, the rest of the Anthony trade may be approved by the Nuggets over the weekend.
This entire situation became necessary when Anthony became dissatisfied with the Nuggets’ current direction. After reaching the Western Conference Finals two years ago, Denver has returned to the middle of the crowded West, as George Karl’s health problems threw them off to end last year. With all the moves made by other superstars this summer, Anthony appears to have felt left out.
Although the current Anthony trade buzz favors the Nets, it is unlikely that it was his first choice. He has shown more interest in the Knicks and Bulls, but nothing was worked out with those teams. Going to the Nets is the closest alternative to New York, although it is not as attractive. But if Prokhorov is able to get this settled, his efforts to change that could really get off the ground.
