What did we do before the invention of the dry erase board? All that paper and those pencils and pens we used to have to go through to convey messages to one another via the refrigerator! You had to find magnets by which to hang the notes or just leave the messages lying around the kitchen. Things are so much simpler now. With dry erase boards you can write, erase, and write again, as many times as you want. You don’t necessarily need for the dry erase arrangement to be a gigantic wall hanging. Use a CD case to make a much smaller version that hangs on the refrigerator!
A magnetic dry erase pad is easy to make when you use a leftover vinyl floor tile. The peel-n-stick tiles are slick and ideal for using with a dry erase marker. It’s difficult to find the tiles in a solid white color but you can use designs that are light in color, and have subtle marbling, and still be able to see the writing of the dry erase marker. Since these types of tiles are so lightweight it’s a breeze to make them magnetic.
Purchase a piece of magnetic sheeting and cut it to the size of the CD case. Peel and stick the sheeting to the backside of the case. Position the CD case in the center of the floor tile. If you cut the tile in any other manner the pattern won’t be centered. Draw around the case then cut out the vinyl tile square.
It can be helpful to cut a piece of clear plastic, the size of the CD case, and use it for the pattern. It’s much easier to place a piece of clear plastic over the design when trying to get the perfect centering of the tile design. After cutting the tile to the size you need peel away the backing and stick it to the CD case.
Purchase a dry erase marker to use for your set. The markers are often found at stores which sell coloring books, crayons and other markers. Cut a long, thin strip of Velcro to hold the dry erase pen to the new pad. Peel and stick one piece of the Velcro to the side of the pen and position the opposing piece to the top or side of the dry erase pad.
The magnetic dry erase refrigerator board makes it easy to leave short messages for other members of the family. The simple but useful dry erase will serve you for years to come!
