Strawberry Shortcake has been around in the form of little toy dolls for over 30 years. She and her friends are loved for their simplicity, their personalities tied to sweet things, and their accompanying pets.
Once just a line of dolls and accessories, the Strawberry Shortcake story became a television series in the 1980s and brought a whole new world of fun to young girls. Like many toys and things that hold nostalgic places in our hearts, the Strawberry Shortcake dolls and memorabilia of one generation’s youth, became the new thing for their children.
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Strawberry Shortcake made a comeback that included a number of movies that were sold on VHS and eventually on DVD. Changes are inevitable when new management takes over a line of entertainment but the basic premise is still the same. One of the positive new items that incorporate the Strawberry Shortcake world that so many know and love is their movie, The Sweet Dreams Movie, which was released in 2006 to select theatres across the country.
The Sweet Dreams Movie is special because it brings back some villains that were around in the earlier TV shows that many new recruits to Strawberry Shortcake’s world did not know. The Purple Pieman and his sister, Sour Grapes, are bent on destroying all of Strawberry’s dreams and her tasty goodies. The unique thing about this movie is that it is a computer animated movie, which gives Strawberry Shortcake and her friends an interesting look.
In The Sweet Dreams Movie kids learn about being part of a team and overcoming their fears and working hard to make their dreams come true. Strawberry Shortcake is joined by her pals Angel Cake, Ginger Snap, Orange Blossom, Raspberry Torte, Lemon Meringue, and their little furry friends, Pupcake and Custard.
One of the things that we didn’t like about this movie was the sassiness of a few of the characters, in particular, the cat Custard. Strawberry Shortcake herself is so sweet that it is almost enough to offset those moments of talking back but it really doesn’t need to be in the movie at all for the story to flow. That seems to be the case with many movies made in the last decade. Overall, Strawberry Shortcake’s The Sweet Dreams Movie is a refreshing recapturing of a girl and her friends putting their best feet forward and working together.
