Thanksgiving Day is when we get together with our families to celebrate the achievements from the struggles we’ve faced in this country and even though this is not a Holiday we’ve brought from Latin-America, Latinos who live in this country have adopted it as their own.
We might want to take advantage with the fact that our children are off from school for the holiday and since this is a Family Celebration, we can use this time to talk or take them on a road trip to the closest mountain to play in the snow. Remember that all year long we work and they stay in school all day and the quality and quantity of time to share with one another is minimal
Turkey should be the most traditional meal for this day, but a pozole or tamales wouldn’t be too bad of an idea either. What’s important is to sit together as a family, pray to the All Mighty and remember about the reasons we had to leave our birth places, what are the struggles we’ve already overcome and what are our plans for the future.
I have a small family in Las Vegas but we try to get together every year, and after our mother passed away, we take turns on who has to prepare the Thanksgiving dinner which we try to keep traditional, and consist of a stuffed turkey, mash potatoes and rice with a Salvadorian touch that we learned from her: stuffing made of pork meat with carrots and peas, hand made mashed potatoes with milk, margarine and onions and rice we prepare with clams, shrimps , more carrots, corn and green beans.
I really don’t like to cook when it’s my turn because I have to spend all day marinating the dead turkey so it doesn’t dry up, plus boiling potatoes, and cutting vegetables into small pieces – so I opt to invite my family to eat out in a restaurant that day and I come out with the classic – I have a lot of work excuse – or – that we all have to wash the dishes at the end of the day.
One other option I am really thinking about this year – Yes, it is my turn to cook! – is to buy a “TO GO TURKEY DINNER” that many restaurants and casinos sell in Las Vegas for this Holiday and prepared by famous chefs. An example is Hash House a Go Go’s dinner that comes with a ten pound turkey already cooked, mash potatoes and dessert for six people for about $90.00 USD.
At the end, whatever the dinner options there are, let’s not forget that besides all the possessions we have and all the goals we have accomplished in this country, we have to give thanks because we live in a place where food is abundant and pray for the Head of Households in other parts of the world that have no money to buy a plate of food to give their own children to eat.
