We all have our favorite celebrities to watch on the big screen, but what about the other celebrities who aren’t doing so well? They end up in a downward spiral of addiction, rehab, and prison time. Like a train wreck, we can’t help but watch. With Lil Wayne recently being released from prison, is his life doomed to the same fate as so many celebrities before him?
Despite what you may think, not all celebrities who get thrown in prison lose their life and careers. A perfect example of this is Tim Allen, one of the most well-known celebrities ever to make a recovery after serving prison time.
Young children will know him as the voice of famous Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story 1, 2, and 3. Teenagers will remember his humorous performance in The Santa Clause, which is still a classic Christmas movie over 15 years later. Even adults will remember him as the goofy loon on the sitcom Home Improvement. What most people don’t remember is that Tim Allen’s prison sentence would change his life.
On Oct. 2, 1978, Allen was arrested for having over a pound of cocaine in his possession. He later admitted to drug trafficking, and in exchange for a shorter prison sentence, gave the names of the other drug dealers he knew. Right off the bat, this makes Tim Allen one of the smarter celebrities to go to prison.
Had Allen not been willing to give the names of the drug dealers, he would have risked spending life in prison. This may have seemed like it is an easy choice to make, but there have been other celebrities who have been unwilling to cooperate in prison situations like this. An example would be Lil’ Kim, who spent a year in prison after refusing to reveal details of a shooting that her friends took part in.
Tim Allen is one of the few celebrities who has managed to recover from his prison sentence and get his life back. After getting out of prison, he went on to star in family films. This turned him from a serious drug dealer who had done time in prison to a funny family man whom everyone loved.
For Allen, life after prison was great. He was careful and smart enough to not let himself get out of control. Even when he was arrested again for DUI charges in 1997, he put himself back on track by entering rehab and hasn’t had a problem since.
Not all celebrities are this smart when it comes to prison.
An example of celebrities who aren’t quite as smart with their prison sentence is Lindsay Lohan. The days of being known for family flicks such as The Parent Trap,Freaky Friday, and Mean Girls are long over. Now she’s one of the many celebrities who is seemingly throwing her life away on an addiction.
If celebrities could learn anything from Lindsay Lohan’s prison time, it’s to take your life seriously. She’s been in trouble with the law multiple times for DUIs and other drug- and alcohol-related charges. Unfortunately, she doesn’t seem to have learned a lesson from any of this.
After Lohan violated her probation in the summer of 2010, she was sentenced to 90 days in prison and three months in rehab. Rather than using this as an opportunity to get her life on track, Lindsay Lohan seemed to just not care. One would think that she would be concerned about her life going down the drain, but she wasn’t. Instead, Lohan was more concerned about how she would look in all her pre-prison photos. Before getting locked up for her sentence, she made sure to have her hair dyed and her lips freshly plumped.
As she was taken into the court room, Lohan actually spent her time playing with her newly plumped lips and smirking, perhaps planning how her prison mugshot would look.
After being released from prison and entering rehab, Lohan continued to blow off her life. She has repeatedly said she can’t afford rehab and that she has more important things to be doing. I’m not sure what those “more important things” are, considering her career is on halt thanks to her actions.
Rather than trying to learn something from her time in prison and now rehab, Lindsay continues to act as if it’s not needed. Everyone knows the first step is admitting you have a problem, but she can’t even do that.
It seems like celebrities these days just don’t think, or perhaps just don’t care about their lives. Another example of celebrities who have this problem is Snoop Dogg.
Snoop Dogg, like Lindsay Lohan, seems to have trouble thinking his actions through. Despite being arrested and put in prison when he was just a teenager, Snoop Dogg continues to have trouble with the law.
In the past 20 years alone, the rapper has been in trouble for traffic violations; possession of firearms; accomplice of murder; possession of drugs including cocaine, marijuana, and paraphernalia — the list goes on and on.
For whatever reason, Snoop Dogg doesn’t seem to care what laws he breaks, if he’s sent to prison, or how much trouble he causes. This was made apparent when he was denied entrance to the United Kingdom because of his past history with trouble. Tell me, how are you supposed to be a famous rap star if you can’t even visit the country where your fans are? Some celebrities might think that would damage your career, but Snoop Dogg doesn’t seem to think so.
All celebrities have fans who love and adore them. Many children look to these celebrities as their role models and want to be just like them. What will they think when they get sent to prison? Sure, fans can be forgiving, but for how long? How are fans supposed to care about their beloved celebrities when they won’t even care about themselves?
If anyone can learn anything from celebrities who have gone to prison, it’s to stop goofing off and take your life seriously. Your life doesn’t have to be a train wreck, and you can get better. You can get yourself back on track. You just have to choose to get serious and get help.
