I love decorating my house for autumn and Thanksgiving holidays, but like everyone else in the US right now can’t justify the expense. Thanks to dollar stores which carry tons of cheap autumn decor, our family came up with several ways to decorate our fireplace mantel in an Autumn or Thanksgiving theme for just a few dollars. Need ideas? Here’s a few examples of the cheap ways in which we decorated both the piano top and the the fireplace mantel for Autumn.
Autumn florals, mini pumpkins, and natural objects
To make the decor shown in picture #1, you will need autumn themed florals from the dollar store, cheap mini pumpkins (live or ceramic), pumpkin spice scented mini candle, and natural objects such as sea shells, pine cones, and dried flowers.
1. Arrange the pumpkins on the mantel, with the largest pumpkin in the back and the smaller ones forward.
2. Trim the tags from the floral arrangement, carefully place between a couple of pumpkins with the flowers facing forward. Adjust the flowers so they are splayed.
3. Scatter the scented candle, sea shells, pine cones, or other natural objects in front of the pumpkins and florals to finish the mantel decor.
Autumn florals with a row of mini gourds
For this simple mantel decoration, line up your collection of mini ceramic (or live) pumpkins from side-to-side. Tuck a sprig of autumn florals somewhere in the row so that the blooms face forward. Adjust the blooms until the arrangement looks balanced. To create a bit of a backdrop, a cheap reed basket propped up on it’s side behind the gourds can look charming (picture #2).
For the best deals on cheap hand painted ceramic pumpkins or gourds, hit the dollar stores where these little treasures are quite the bargain.
Leaf garland, pumpkin scented candles, ceramic turkeys
For sis who lives up in the cold north, we found 5 ft length autumn leaf garlands at Dollar Tree to dress up her fireplace mantel on the cheap. Draped on a mantel around last years collection of Thanksgiving pillar candles and cheap ceramic turkey salt & pepper shakers, this leafy garland will certainly brighten up her house for the fall.
Sis will be using candles and turkeys because that’s what she owns. Other cheap or free items that could be used might include pine cones, dried ears of corn, acorns, acorn squash, old bird nests, or wooden dollar store turkey figurines.
Dollar store Autumn Flora mixed with dried wild flowers.
This is the time of year when roadsides are filled with dried, but colorful native plants such as yarrow. To add a little variety to a dried floral arrangement, mix them up with a couple of sprigs of dollar store Autumn foliage and arrange in a pretty vase. Tie an over-sized autumn themed bow around the vase using Dollar Store crafting ribbon to apply the finishing touch.
Creating a cheap, low cost mantel decoration for autumn or Thanksgiving really isn’t that hard to do. A few floral sprigs from the dollar store, some ceramic turkeys or pumpkins, and things from around the house can be assembled into a unique mantel decoration that will look more expensive than it really is.
