Kids come home from school and toss their school stuff on the first available surface they come too. The mad scramble the following morning to find the school stuff, pack lunch, sign papers and remember appointments for the day often leaves something forgotten. This cheap, decorative idea will help change that and keep kid’s school stuff organized in the home’s entranceway, plus allow for memos to be jotted down for the day’s activities.
Take a Profile Picture of Each Child
Take a profile picture of each child and enlarge it to the size of a sheet of paper or larger. A copy shop can enlarge the profile picture to any size desired. Lay a sheet of paper over the enlarged profile picture and trace the child’s profile. If the paper is too thick to allow for visibility of the profile, cut the child’s profile out and lay it on top of the paper and trace around it.
Pattern for Chalkboard Contact Paper
The cut out profile will be the pattern for cutting chalkboard contact paper. Chalkboard contact paper can be purchased at school or office supply stores or online, and is inexpensive at around $10 per roll. Trace the child’s profile onto the chalkboard contact paper, then cut out the child’s silhouette.
Coat Rack and Hooks
Cut a wood board the appropriate size to fit vertically into the home entranceway and to accommodate hooks for each child to hang school stuff on (coats, book bags, etc.). Paint the wood a complimentary color to the home, then when the paint has dried, install coat hooks into the board one to two feet apart, depending on space. Install the newly created coat rack onto the wall at a kid friendly level.
If creating a DIY coat rack is not desirable, a suitable sized coat rack can be purchased at most any store that carries home décor items.
Apply the Chalkboard Contact Paper
Above each hook on the coat rack apply a child’s silhouette to the wall. The peel and stick chalkboard contact paper is removable. Each kid will now have their own space to hang their school stuff and the chalkboard contact paper allows for writing memos and reminders for the day’s activities in chalk.
Easy to make, easy to organize, easy to update and complimentary to the home’s décor, this is a cheap, decorative way to organize kid’s school stuff in the home entrance.
