I don’t eat a lot of chips. Don’t get me wrong. I love them. I just happen to know they aren’t good for me.
When I do eat chips; however, I gravitate toward certain kinds. One of those is cheese puffs. While I much prefer the Wise variety, my husband is a fan of Cheetos Puffs made with real cheese.
Although this chip snack is guaranteed to be fresh until the date printed on the package, I have to say I haven’t found that to be true. I have tried this snack food many times and each time I have gotten hold of stale, inedible chips. Perhaps that is why I prefer Wise.
On the other hand, I fully admit that I have never called the company to lodge a complaint. They do provide a number for just that purpose at 1-800-352-4477. It can be called anytime between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
The problem is I think that is too much trouble. I’d rather just have a fresh, crispy snack in the first place. Consequently, I rarely reach for Cheetos when a cheesy snack attack occurs.
My husband likes buying the small 7/8 of an ounce packages. These represent a serving size of Cheetos Puffs.
There are 140 calories in a single serving. Of that, 80 are fat-related.
There are 9 grams of fat in this snack food. Two grams of that comes from saturated fat.
While Cheetos Puffs are cholesterol free, they contain 12 grams of carbohydrates and 310 micrograms of salt. They have less than one gram of sugar as well.
On the good side; however, these cheesy snacks also provide 2 grams of protein, 4% of the daily-recommended amount of vitamin E as well as 2 grams of the needed riboflavin and thiamin.
Ingredients in this snack food include cheddar cheese, cheese cultures, enriched corn meal, milk, salt, sour cream, soybean oil, sunflower oil, vegetable oil and whey. They also include artificial colors and flavors, citric acid, dissodium phosphate, enzymes, lactic acid, maltodextrin and monosodium glutamate.
Frito-Lay, Inc. of Plano, Texas makes Cheetos. They have been around for as far back as I can remember. I loved them as a child but don’t enjoy them as an adult.
Here is my summary review:
Taste: 2 stars. This is the main complaint I have with Cheetos Puffs. I don’t like the taste or consistency. The puffs are hard and super crunchy. I much prefer the Wise variety because they literally melt in your mouth. To me, they also taste much cheesier than these puffs. That isn’t a good sign when you are talking about a product that claims to be made with real cheddar cheese.
Freshness: 0 stars. I said it before and I’ll say it again. I have yet to find a bag of Cheetos Puffs that isn’t already stale when I open them. That’s a major concern since most people don’t like stale chips.
Variety: 5 stars. I will give this to Frito-Lay. They make an amazing variety of chips to choose from; even in their cheddar variety. If the puffs don’t suit your fancy you can try another option like Chili Limon, Crunchy Cheese, Crunchy Jalapeno, Flamin’ Hot Cheese, Flamin’ Hot Limon Cheese, Ragin’ Cajun Cheese, Salsa Picante Cheese, Twisted Cheese, White Cheddar and Wild Habanero.
Reputation: 5 stars. Cheetos enjoys a good reputation so I think my experiences have been somewhat of an anomaly.
Nutrition: 3 stars. As I noted before, chips aren’t the best snack food for you. That applies here as well. Cheetos Cheese Puffs are high in carbs and sodium. They do; however, provide some protein and vitamins and nutrients. It’s a tradeoff that you have to decide whether or not is right for you.
Packaging: 5 stars. Cheetos Puffs come in a bright orange and blue bag with Chester Cheetah on the front, gobbling down some cheese puffs. The Cheetos logo is prominently displayed, making this product easy to locate on the store shelf.
Ease of storage: 5 stars. The small 7/8 of an ounce bag are perfect for storing in a lunch bag or box, in a cabinet or drawer. It measures 6 ½” in length and 5″ in width.
Availability: 5 stars. Cheetos products are found in most major grocery stores and even quite a few convenience stores, discount department stores and drug stores.
Price: 5 stars. My husband found his cheese snacks, three for $1 at Dollar General. They sell for $.25 at the commissary. It’s a bargain for that price.
Product purchase probability: 5 stars. While I personally wouldn’t buy these chips for myself, I will purchase them for my husband. That is, until I manage to convert him to my brand.
Final rating: 3.6 stars. These chips are okay. Wise is better!
