The word is out. Chelsea Handler will be hosting the 2010 MTV Music Video Awards. At 53 years of age and nearly menopausal, you probably won’t be shocked to learn that I’ve never actually watched the MTV Video Music Awards.
Well, I take that back. I couldn’t stop myself from watching when Britney Spears used the 2007 MTV VMA’s in Las Vegas to stage her much anticipated comeback after the preceding years of head-shaving and psychiatric interventions. It was, as we all remember, well, there are no words to describe it. But, like millions of others, I tuned in and cringed on her behalf. I’m a mommy, what can I say.
There have been other occasions when I’ve considered tuning in, like when Russell Brand hosted the 2008 show (Tell me he’s not seriously funny) and others when I’ve regretted not tuning in. Like each and every time Kanye West shows up. Good grief.
But, since MTV has wisely snapped up the sassy and seriously bawdy, Chelsea Handler with a white hot career, well, what can I say. I just have to watch.
In addition to hosting her talk show on The E! Network, Chelsea Lately, Chelsea Handler is also a New York Times bestselling author with three books under her fashionable belt, My Horizontal Life: A Collection of One Night Stands, published in 2005, Are You There, Vodka? It’s Me, Chelsea, published in 2008 and her latest, Chelsea ChelseaBang Bang published in 2010.
To say she’s on the rise is an understatement. Due entirely to the fact, I think, that Chelsea Handler is one of the few women comics who can be sharp, edgy, irreverent and down-right raunchy, yet, remain undeniably feminine at the same time. D-lister, Kathy Griffin, flirts with the sweet and sour combination on occasion, but, always manages to offend someone sooner or later. Janeane Garofalo, well, she just makes me want to take a shower.
I’m certain the MTV Video Music Awards will be full of the usual over-the-top performances with plenty of shock value, what, with Eminem performing and everything (Katie, bar the door) and you never know, someone might throw a little politics in the mix and blame George W. Bush for the failing economy or Ground Zero mosque controversy.
But, if Chelsea Handler has her way, there just might be another Kanye West-Taylor Swift redux. At least, that’s what she told E!’s Ryan Seacrest on his radio show recently. Let’s hope, kids. Let’s hope.
The awards will be airing Sunday, September 12th at 9:00 p.m. eastern time. This old broad will be there.
