Autumn’s arrived, and for many, this means wet, cold conditions ahead. Rain now, snow, slush and sleet soon. The Northeast’s already enjoyed a mini-monsoon season, and it might not be over yet.
Weather takes a toll on the psyche. Even those who don’t suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) – which according to the Mayo Clinic starts kicking in about now – get glum when there’s no sweet sunshine for days.
As much as I love a rainy night, dragging myself around on the third or fourth in a string of damp days gets me down. While living in San Francisco, which is rain-sodden four months out of the year, I learned a few things about lifting my spirits when precipitation presses down. The one that’s been most valuable? Don’t laugh.
Get rain boots you LOVE. Few things put a damper on the day quite like soaked-through shoes and soggy socks. Ditto cumbersome, ill-fitting footwear. Comfy, functional shoes aren’t always the cutest. But, it’s possible to find rain boots that are stylish (or at least fun), comfortable and do their job keeping you dry. Invest in a pair!
It might sound silly, but you’re allowed a little frivolity if it keeps the old mood elevated. Trust me; experience is my teacher. Bad weather days are less of a bummer when your shoes make you feel like your strut has background music. When you’re just too excited about slipping into some funky foot-huggers. You might even look forward to a little drizzle.
Just for fun, some galoshes I’d don:
Retro Birdies – A little art goes a long way. And, thanks to these Target beauts, so will your dollar.
Sperry Top-Sider Pelicans (in Black/Moss Droplet) – I have it on good authority that Sperrys top the pops in sturdiness.
Earth Elites (in Cherry Patent) – Who says you can’t hit the club when it pours? Pshhh.
Kamik Heathers (in Brown) – Festive and romantic for Fall. (I like ’em in Plum, too).
Sporto Wendys – The silver lining of your cloud-covered day.
Merona Zenia Whales – These happy humpbacks will handle all that water for you.
Kors Michael Kors Stormy (in Fatigue Rubber) – Ready for commuter combat.
Those were some of my favorites, but you should make your own decisions. And now, a thought from Levende Waters: “Funny that a pair of really nice shoes make us feel good in our heads – at the extreme opposite end of our bodies.”
