The day has not yet begun
The sky is still gray,
But the morning already bustles
It’s Christmas Day.
The children are not sleeping
They tried to stay up late last night.
They dreamed of fun and presents
While restlessly awaiting first light.
Now night has turned into morning
Although the day is barely here,
Parents are slowly rising
Spurred by urgings of little dears
The tree has stood both waiting and delighting,
Watching the planned festivities take shape.
The colorful lights, the glittering bobbles
Are now surrounded by packages taped.
This day begins with oohs and ahs
Punctuated by squeals of delight;
These things were not here at bedtime
This makes Santa seem real all right.
Breakfast is simple this morning
Dinner must start before this meal is through;
Turkey, stuffing and all those extras.
For this meal, a day’s work to do.
The children enjoy new toys, games and vacation
Soon great smells fill all the house
Reminding us of Grandma’s long-loved recipes
And the family of your spouse.
Family drifts in and out of the kitchen
Helping and advising at their turn.
New gifts have young imaginations whirling
Listen, while seeing that things don’t burn.
As morning evolves into noontime
Today lunch is replaced a veggie tray.
The big meal is a few hours
Lots more food on the way.
Time for more loved ones to start arriving,
Much more day will happen here.
But this morning was, as always, special
We’ll welcome it all again next year
