The genius who invented the clear glass ornament – you know, those ones you can open and fill yourself – was really on to something! Now people grab them up to make personalized ornaments that show off a picture or fill them with tiny candies to make an ornament treat. Use one of those clear glass ornaments to make a stunning terrarium and it can be displayed long after the holiday is over!
The clear ornaments are found at craft stores and cost a little more than an ordinary ornament. However, once you take the top off, and fill the ornament with plants you’ve chosen, you’ll find the finished ornament well worth the price.
Insert Spanish moss, sand, dry dirt, small pebbles, a slender piece of bark, crumbled leaves, or other items into the glass ornament. These items will create the floor of the terrarium. Now select the main features that will go inside the ball.
Use fake greenery or real plants to make the beautiful terrarium. Cut pieces of artificial plants and you can make most any arrangement you want. Arrange just a few plants, though, so the terrarium doesn’t look too crowded. Set the plants so that some rise high inside the ball and some of them stay closer to the bottom. Use tweezers, a small stick or a similar item to arrange the plants the way you want.
If you’re using real plants, cut pieces of a few different types, then arrange them inside the ornament. Every once in a while, squirt a few drops of water inside the ornament to keep the plants alive. When you’re finished creating the design you want just place the cap on the ball and hang it on the Christmas tree.
After the holidays are over you can keep displaying the terrarium ornament by choosing something to use as a base. A block of wood, a product lid, or even a square of painted cardboard will work. Use a piece of double-sided tape to hold the tiny terrarium to the base. Set just one on a base or make a set of three and display them, side-by-side. Attach a bow to the hanger area to help conceal it. These can be set on a shelf, mantle, table or other flat surface and are gorgeous in a bedroom, kitchen, bathroom or most any room of the house!
