Do you have one of those old red stockings with the white fur trim leftover from a previous Christmas? Did you know you can use it to make new things for you home and your family this holiday? If you don’t have one, pick one up at a dollar-theme store, and use it to make new things for Christmas.
Cut circles of the red fur and use them as drink coasters. When needed, rinse them out with warm water, allow them to dry, and use them again. It’s up to you if you want to make solid red coasters or glue a white circle of fur around each coaster.
Cut the red fur from the stocking into letters. Stick a piece of magnetic sheeting on the back and spell out a Christmas phrase on the refrigerator or other metallic surface. Or, cut red fur shapes like stockings and use double-sided tape to attach the designs to curtain tie-backs, lampshades or other objects.
Cut a rectangular strip from the white or red fur to make a choker-style Christmas necklace for a young girl. Attach a piece of Velcro to the ends of the strip as a closure. Affix a flat Christmas ornament onto the front of the choker and you’ll be surprised at just how beautiful this accessory is! Cut a smaller piece and make a matching bracelet.
Make a table trivet by cutting a large circle from the red fur. Cut a cardboard circle to be the same size as the fur. Glue the fur onto the cardboard and trim around the raw edges of the cardboard with a piece of decorative roping. Set these on the table to hold hot dishes. Or, set a candle on the trivets to decorate.
Cut the white fur off of one or more of the stockings and use it to decorate many other things. Cut the entire strip off, then cut the side seam, and place pieces of double-sided tape on the back. Wrap these around lampshades, picture frames, clocks and other objects.
Take the stocking and cut it into shapes like squares, circles, ovals and rectangles. Use these as rugs or even a couch throw in a dollhouse. Cut larger pieces and use them as comforters. Cut squares from the red fur and make pillows for a doll bed.
Make a Christmas skirt for a large doll by cutting the top section from the stocking. Sew a piece of elastic around the cut area and use it as the waistband. Make a matching vest by cutting a simple vest shape, for the front and back, and sewing the shoulder and side seams together.
Cut an oval from a red stocking and set a baby’s foot on it. Gather it around the ankle and use a ribbon to tie it shut. Cut tiny holes around the ankle area, spaced evenly apart, and thread a ribbon or shoe string through them. This is a cute way to make Christmas booties for a small baby.
Why go out and buy red and white fur this year when you can use old Christmas stockings instead? Since the stockings are so cheap you can create many different things for less than a buck each!
