It is well known among family and friends that Christmas is my favorite holiday. I love buying gifts, making cream pies, and all the other fun traditions that come with the time of year. Even with all the different traditions of the holidays that occur the day of Christmas, my favorite Christmas tradition happens the day after Thanksgiving, and it is not the Black Friday Sales.
While everyone is at crowded stores fighting over the latest electronics or hottest toy of the year, my family and I are at home. We spend the day putting up our Christmas tree and decorating our house. We make gingerbread people and then laugh as we bite off their little gingerbread heads. It is one of the best days of the holiday season.
Decorating the tree isn’t really a new tradition and several families celebrate this Christmas tradition. Our family adds our own little twist to the tradition. Every year each one of us has a Christmas ornament that is special to us. Some years we go shopping and pick them out and other years we make the ornaments at home.
When my middle daughter’s was 18 months old she picked out her special ornament and it made us all laugh. The best thing in her world at the time was a ball. It was her favorite toy and she was ecstatic to see a whole entire aisle at the store filled with large Christmas ornaments in the shape of a ball. She picked out a large blue ball and clung to it while sitting in the shopping cart.
Two years ago, my son was still an infant and couldn’t pick out his own ornament yet. I had knit him the first sweater I had ever knit in a green camouflage yarn. I was very proud of this sweater and decided he needed a pair of booties to match. The first bootie I knit came out too small and it was deemed to be his ornament for the year.
My husband and I also pick out our own special Christmas ornament. I usually pick out an ornament that reminds me of Christmas as a child. I have many childhood memories of different ornaments we had the tree. My husband on the other hand tries to find the funniest Christmas ornament that he can find. Last he went to Wal-mart and picked out a pirate ship that was being piloted by a cat wearing an eye patch. The year before, he picked out a very obese cow.
Each of us has our own taste and it is fun to see them all together on one beautiful Christmas tree. We love the Christmas tradition of picking out, and sometimes hand crafting, our own special ornament. We like to commemorate the special occasion by taking a picture of each one of us hanging our ornament on the tree. Those pictures are later scrapbooked and saved forever in our family heirloom books.
