Everyone has either heard about the transcript where George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, and Lawrence Kasdan discuss the story for Raiders of The Lost Ark. It is interesting to note how Lucas wanted it structured as a serial with twelve cliffhangers every ten minutes with each one bigger than the last, as opposed to The Monomyth or Hero’s Journey method devised by Joseph Campbell.
The dynamics of the character were also discussed, how Indy is a college professor in anthropology, as well as an archeologist. Yet not walking a straight line between them like an outlaw or soldier of fortune would, along with comparisons to such 1930’s stars as Bogart and Gable. In addition Eastwood or James Bond.
There was discussion over how Indy should also have expertise in spiritualism and voodoo to complement his more logical or technical pursuits. Yet the irony is how these elements were not present in Raiders of The Lost Ark or The Last Crusade, but was indeed a focal point in The Temple of Doom. Lucas describes the opening scene serving as a Disneyland style theme park ride.
