When I was in college in the 1980’s one of my roommates was heavily into what I would call an anti-christian belief system. Now he did not claim that God did not exist, he claimed that Satan “The Fallen One” was more worthy of worship than God.
He argued that Satan really understood man and his base nature, the need to party, get laid, take control of his fellow man and anything Western morality considers wrong, but of course we do it nearly everyday. He was a die- hard follower of Anton Levay author of “The Satanic Bible”. Now in college I read this book in some detail and in a word it was hilarious. I am unsure how any rational person could ever believe anything written in it. Which was much like the Bible in it’s absurdity of stories.
Here is one such quote that many have turned into a flagship of rock tossing at atheism.
“There is no heaven of glory bright, and no hell where sinners roast. Here and now is our day of torment! Here and now is our day of joy! Here and now is our opportunity! Choose ye this day, this hour, for no redeemer liveth!” [ The Satanic Bible: The Book of Satan IV:2 ]
What was interesting about “The Satanic Bible” was the influence another bizarre individual had on Levay, Alister Crowley. Called The Great Beast, mostly by himself and his followers, was an influential cultist, and magician. He is known and remembered for the central sacred text of Thelema, Called the “Book Of Law” although he also wrote widely on other subjects, including a large amount of fiction and poetry.
He was colorful and flawed and had an interesting travel log as well as sexual adventures that might rival any porn star of today. He was referred to as the “Father of Modern Satanism” and the most “wicked man that ever lived”, guess Hitler, Mao and Stalin just didn’t qualify.
What is so laughable about this belief set, and it rivals Christianity in its stupid and idiotic story line is that everything is about here and now and what you can get out of “the mortal life”, almost sounds like a manual for most CEO’s in modern business.
I have to agree with Bill Maher here, religion and I mean both sides of religion, Christianity, Islam, Scientology, Mormonism, The Christian Identity Movement and hundreds of others are in a word crap.
We have real problems in our world and seeking divine guidance to deal with these problems is like asking sharks not to feed on the bait fish in front of them. Religion is about a primal need to explain why we are here and how we came about, to provide some purpose to our lives because we need some reassurance that our very existence is not without meaning.
Satanism is no more real or meaningfull than any other of the many religions, its tenants seem to support what our world has become, but is based on a creatures that have no more reality than Jesus or Noah. Its sad to think that people chose to wander down such paths and embrace their supposed concepts.
Isn’t that special.
