Today’s modern world has been shaped by the technology built by theses brilliant minds. Without engineers, the world as we know it would not exist. Civil Engineering is an engineer that particularly concentrates on bridges, buildings, and roads. Even though civil engineering is based on hard complex math equations, it provides the ability to oversee the building and safety of a structure.
Civil engineering has become one of the fastest growing jobs in America. Civil engineering has increased in the last several years, and by 2016 there should be a 20% increase (careercrusing). Every year there is a total of 500 openings and the numbers are expected to grow increasingly into 2016 (careercrusing). Most openings for the job are given to those who have at least a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, while those who have a master’s degree are more likely to have higher wages. Those who decide to achieve the civil engineering job usually start off as an Engineer in training or an EIT/Engineering in Training (careercrusing). In order to become a Professional Engineer, several years of on the job training and a passing score on a test are required. Professional Engineers, also known as PE, are offered better wages as well as a greater possibility of gaining a job (bls.gov). Even though some of the benefits that a civil engineer might receive are nice, “a great deal of knowledge must be known” (engineering.com). A great deal of higher level math such as calculus and trigonometry should be known if going into the career. An understanding of AutoCad and drafting are required; otherwise most tasks will not be complete (bls.gov). A professional engineer will be certified after taking a certain test. Once the test is completed the engineer is given the title professional engineer (bls.gov). In order to keep the title one must renew the certification by retaking the test or paying dues each year. Some expectations needed from a civil engineer are being able to talk to others. People skills are very important as a civil engineer because engineers must talk with their clients (careerinfonet). Another expectation needed from a civil engineer is the use of a Cad program. Cad is drafting software that allows one to draw on the computer easily instead of having to draw by hand (careerinfonet). The job requires a tremendous amount of work and traveling.
The working conditions for a civil engineer is usually a desk, though at sometimes the civil engineer is required to visit the project site with his or her clients (careerinfonet). The environment for a civil engineer includes an office with a computer, phone, and a drafting table. Their co-workers are usually close by in another office. Civil engineers also travel to their site and survey the land to take back to their office. Safety issues may depend on were the site is located. If it is located near a fast moving river, safety issues may be a problem. While working on a prairie may pose no safety risks. Civil engineers often have the ability to travel (asce). If they work for a big firm and have sites all over the country, they may need to survey these. Civil Engineering can often become stressful (careercrusing).Travel and late hours can leave some with great stress. At times even work on the weekends or at home is necessary if an approaching deadline is near. In the workplace there are many challenges, but if one works for a good firm, they will be more likely to receive better benefits.
Civil Engineering can often be a difficult job and when the job is over there are many perks and rewards recieved. The wages that a civil engineer receives are very pleasing. The entry level wage when entering the field after college is 52,000 dollars. This requires a least a bachelors degree, “though those who enter with a masters or PhD tend to make more money” (Fergusoncareerfocus). The median income for civil engineers is about 75,000 to 85,000 dollars (careercrusing). If a civil engineer has management responsibilities, they could make upwards of 115,000 dollars (careercrusing). In addition to their salaries, “many civil engineers receive benefits, such as pension plans, health insurance, and paid sick leave, even some engineers receive regular, performance-based bonuses that can increase their annual income quite a bit” (careercrusing). The number of vacation days an engineer will receive will depend on the level of seniority. Junior engineers may get as few as 10 days off a year, while those at the top may take 20 or more. Some firms may even allow some type of subscription to a gym or health club. These would usually be bigger firms with more people. Though these benefits are nice, one must earn it.
The future for Civil Engineering is important if one wants to enter the field. Civil engineering is supposed to rise within the next several years. The need for civil engineering is important. As the baby boomers die off, there will be a need for hospitals. More roads and bridges will need to be built as America becomes ever more populated. Engineers are required to create structures of great proportions (modernmarvels). Civil Engineering is a job that cannot be outsourced (evers). The need for engineers in America is high and this job market should increase by 20% into 2016(ascelibrary). When a civil engineer leaves college they begin as an EIT or Engineering in training (careercrusing). Their responsibility is to analyze and design routine projects under the guidance and supervision of a licensed engineer. Once they have taken the required tests and had several years of on the job training as an EIT, they may be promoted to a PE or Professional Engineer. Their responsibilities are designing basic structures and individual components of larger designs. Also they supervise on-site construction. If promoted, a PE may become an Intermediate Engineer (careercrusing). Several years of being a licensed PE are required to attain this job. Their responsibilities include designing more complex structures as well as supervising junior engineers or EITs. The next rank up in the job is a senior engineer. In order to become a senior engineer many years as a PE are required (careercrusing). Their responsibilities include overseeing the analysis and design of several projects, as well as supervising trainees and junior engineers (careercrusing).They also act as a liaison between clients and government officials while performing administrative and managerial duties (careercrusing). The last or highest level you can be in civil engineering is a Senior Partner or a manager. The qualifications for this position include a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree or other business-related qualification (careercrusing). As the highest in their field their responsibilities would include, “Managing a large number of employees; pursuing new clients; ensuring that the organization is meeting its financial objectives; performing many administrative duties” (careercrusing). There are many related careers to civil engineering. The whole field of engineering could be related to civil engineering (bls.gov). An architect who designs homes and buildings could be close to an engineer in the sense that they both have an effect if the building will be usable and how will it stand. Civil engineering can also become a military profession (ferguesonsencyclopedia). They would plan, design, and direct the construction of military facilities. The day in the life of all engineers may be similar in a way that they spend most of the time indoors behind a desk.
The day in the life of a civil engineer may be long to some, yet easy to those who do the job. After arriving at work at 8:00 for an hour the engineer checks phone calls, organizing for the day, and emails his or hers superiors and co-workers about their pending projects. From 9:00 to 11:30 they usually are designing the structure of a building or bridge including beams, columns, floor slabs, and the framing. Afterward they Give the design to a technician for them draw. Once done they will analyze forces to the structure. After this is done the engineer will go out for a 45 minute lunch. From 12:15 to 1:00 the engineer will prepare their information for the upcoming meeting with their clients(careercrusing). They will also return calls and analyze information for the upcoming meeting. From 1:00 to 2:00, the engineer will attend a meeting where they will discuss projects with their other team members. At this time other engineers will attend including electrical, mechanical, and piping engineers to finalize the plans for the structure and its construction(careercrusing). From 2:30 to 5:00, the engineer will visit the site and consult with their clients (careercrusing) . At this time they will review structural aspects of the construction site as well as take meas4urements of the site. When meeting with the client they will discuss what the client wants for the structure. After receiving feedback from what the client wants, the engineer will go back to his office and research to find a similar building or structure that has already been built (evers). Once he or she finds those plans they will modify those plans to what the client wants for the new building. Afterward they can go home. Most of the day is spent working with numbers behind a desk. The computer and phone are used quite a bit as well. Drawing out and drafting is used quite a bit while on the job (evers). Most of the day is spent in an office building, yet sometimes the engineer travels to the site.
