Turn based strategy computer games have been around for awhile. Most of these games though were simply based on older boardgames. Most of the games never were played by the mass public. Then with the backing of Sid Merier’s the Civilization series introduced the average gamer to the genre. While there are a few other mainstream titles in the genre Civilization is the top game of this genre and the one all others are judged by. With the release of Civilization V you have to wonder how the new game stacks up to its predecessors.
Civilization V has no competition from Civilization I-III. However it does have competition from Civilization IV. When Civ IV came out it really pushed the envelope on what the computers of the time could do. You had to have a high end machine to play Civ IV well. Even now the game plays well even though it is 5 years old. This means that Civilization V has some large shoes to fill.
Civilization IV was such a step up that it did not bother us that it was the same game but updated as the other games. I find with Civilization V though I am getting kind of tired of the same game updated every so many years. Yeah there are updates but it does not do much to improve on the same old game. I am a fan of the Civilization series as well as the genre and I am getting a bit bored with the game.
For the regular gamer the genre can be tedious and slow. Even for a fan of the genre after awhile you start to take shortcuts. A good turn based strategy game should give you cheats but they rarely do. You are going to be forced to sit for hours for one game and if you lose its a greater hit then losing a game that takes a much shorter time to play. Yes games like Star Craft can take hours to play but there is much more happening. Most turn based games do have some in game options to hurry up the game. The Civilization series allows you to take off the animations to hurry up battles which helps. The game is also complex and this is another reason the casual gamer will want to stay away.
Civilization V has great graphics but most any game now has great graphics. The sound is not great but you cant expect much for a game like this and in fact sound gets to be distracting and you will probably turn it off. On its own it would be a pretty good game but if you have played any of the other games in the series you will tire of the game quickly. For me this is a game worth playing for a few weeks and then going on to something else.
I would recommend this game to fans of the franchise who just have to get it because its a Civ game. I would also recommend it to anyone with patience who has never played a Civilizations game. If you want fast paced and a quick game though this is not for you. If you are a casual Civ fan then this game is not for you either. Sadly there is a reason you see people playing Star Craft II and not Civilization at LANs.
