There aren’t many things better than seeing your favorite classic Christmas films on the big screen. What many people don’t know is that a number of theaters provide special showings of Christmas classics. It’s a fun, inexpensive holiday activity, and if you live in the Chicagoland area, you won’t want to miss these great films playing this Christmas at some beautiful historic theaters.
The Tivoli Theatre – Downers Grove. The Tivoli is a revamped historic movie house, opened in 1928 and now run by Classic Cinemas. They show discount second-run movies year-round, but every December they run a week-long Classic Film Festival. This year they’re featuring “The Bishop’s Wife,” “Meet John Doe,” “Planes, Trains & Automobiles,” “White Christmas,” and “National Lampoons Christmas Vacation,” December 12th through the 16th. They’re also running “It’s A Wonderful Life” on December 4th and 5th.
Hollywood Blvd. & Hollywood Palms – Woodridge and Naperville. These fairly new theatres both serve restaurant style food during the movies. It’s a unique movie experience and they’re known for their special film events with guest celebrities. For Christmas, they feature “It’s A Wonderful Life” with special guest Karolyn Grimes, Zu Zu in the film–on December 17th and 19th at the Hollywood Palms in Naperville and December 18th at Hollywood Blvd. in Woodrige.
The Music Box Theatre – Chicago. The Music Box is one of Chicago’s most popular historic theatres. They play mostly independant and foreign films in they’re beautiful, ornate auditorium. Every year they feature a special Christmas double-feature of “White Christmas” and “It’s a Wonderful Life” and this year is no different. Both films will be shown back-to-back December 17th through the 24th.
The Lake Theatre – Oak Park. The Lake is a nice old theater in the heart of downtown Oak Park. This year, they’re showing “It’s A Wonderful Life” on December 11th at 10am., sponsored by the Community Bank of OPRF.
Enjoy Christmas at the movies!
