College football rankings week 6 revelations included Alabama getting 57 of 58 first place votes in the latest USA Today Coaches’ Poll. With Ohio State’s victory over Illinois coming down to the fourth quarter and Alabama beating then No. 7 ranked Florida, the coaches are liking Alabama more than ever. There was only one ballot where Alabama wasn’t the first place team, and that other vote went to Ohio State. Just below these teams was the biggest change though, as Oregon passed Boise State to take the No. 3 ranking in the week 6 poll.
So why did Oregon pass Boise State in the latest Coaches’ Poll? Well Oregon beat then No. 9 ranked Stanford at home, giving them a very impressive win over the high powered offense of the Cardinal. Meanwhile Boise State shut out their opponent (New Mexico State) 59-0 in the other game. The voters obviously aren’t giving any respect to this New Mexico State team, and now Boise State is 24 points behind Oregon in the Coaches’ Poll. It’s hard to foresee Boise State being able to catch any of the top three teams again, unless one of them loses in the coming weeks.
Two new teams joined the top 10 this week, with Auburn moving up to No. 8 from No. 11, and Utah moving from No. 12 up to No. 10. The former No. 10 team LSU moved up to No. 9, giving them a boost that they were unable to find over in the week 6 AP Top 25. The rest of the top 10 this week was TCU at No. 5, followed by Nebraska at No. 6 and Oklahoma at No. 7. The Coaches’ Poll has seen far less shifting than the AP Poll this season, so maybe the coaches are on to something with how they have been voting through the first six weeks.
Two new teams joined the week 6 Coaches’ Poll, with Florida State taking over the No. 24 spot and Northwestern taking over the No. 25 slot. Northwestern has quietly improved their season record to 5-0, giving them one of their most impress starts in recent years. Florida State and Northwestern replaced Texas and Penn State, which both lost for the second time on Saturday, and have now dropped out of both top 25 football polls in college football. The other team that was punished a lot for their loss was Wisconsin, which fell from No. 9 down to No. 19 with their first loss of the 2010 college football season.
