The college football scores for the top 25 left everyone breathless yesterday. However, the college football scores in the top 25 didn’t change Oregon and Auburn’s control of the BCS. For all of the chaos and wild finishes yesterday, a Ducks-Tigers showdown is still a week away from being official. All that yesterday did was eliminate one of the teams that could have threatened that pairing. Yet although yesterday’s top 25 college football scores eliminated one BCS buster, it could have been a lot worse.
The day started with Alabama threatening to blow everything open, as the Tide went up 24-0 over the Auburn Tigers. It could have been even worse than that, but because of fumbles and dropped passes, the Tigers shocked the world in the second half.
The college football scores in the top 25 for this season may be defined by Auburn’s 28-27 comeback victory. If the Tigers win the SEC next week, then yesterday’s comeback will be the hallmark result of the year – and the most heartbreaking for whoever finishes No. 3 next week.
Hours later, Oregon also faced a threat, as they were behind in the second half to Arizona. Two weeks ago, they didn’t escape Cal until the very end, yet this time, they had their customary second half blowout. The 48-29 win put the Ducks one step away from the championship as well, and clinched no worse than a BCS berth.
But the most shocking of the top 25 college football scores came in the wee hours at Nevada. Although Oregon and Auburn avoided being derailed, Boise State was not so lucky. They blew a 24-7 second half lead to Nevada, then blew a chip shot field goal at the end of regulation. After another short Broncos miss, the Wolfpack finished off their 34-31 comeback in overtime.
Although all three BCS leaders were threatened, only one lost, and it was the one on the outside to begin with. The Broncos began the day expecting to reach No. 2, and now they won’t even win their own conference. As such, TCU was the big winner of the day, as they won’t be overtaken by Boise State after all.
The college football scores for the top 25 were rounded out in Nebraska, however. Although the Cornhuskers blew their chance to be championship contenders, they can still win the Big 12 in their last year there. The Cornhuskers secured the Big 12 North by blowing out Colorado, 45-17, and now await their opponent.
Today’s top 25 scores will decide that opponent, as well as the Big Ten champion. In addition, TCU now has more incentive to blow out one-win New Mexico, while LSU even has new life if they can defeat Arkansas.
