The September 11th terrorist attacks made up one of the most influential and tragic events in history. We all need to remember what happened, and what has happened since then. However, schools along with many other institutions have ceased to even mention the tragedy.
For the past five years, my school has memorialized the people killed in September 11th with a moment of silence during the day. I never thought it was enough, but at least it was something. However, this year, not a single mention was made, and there wasn’t even a moment of silence to think about what happened 9 years ago. After school, I got online and found many other instances exactly like mine.
This is not okay. If we as Americans cannot take an extra 30 seconds out of our day to remember and think about something of this magnitude, then we really need to get our priorities straightened out. This event has impacted us tremendously and will have an effect on every American who will live after we are gone. Not to mention that it was one of the most deadly days in history, with almost 3000 people dying within a few hours.
Something needs to be done about this. We have days off school and work to honor our presidents, to honor our leaders, but not a single word on September 11th? Now I am not proposing that something drastic be done, I just want something to be done. I plan to talk to my principal about this, and I suggest you do the same. Or even if you don’t want to, please simply remember 9/11.
