When I cook dinner every night for my family, my inspiration is love, which is my favorite secret ingredient to use. If I just to try to make it taste good and don’t add my secret ingredient, its just a regular old meal. I always try to make sure that I use a dash of love, even when making a simple box of Mac and Cheese. Why? Because it just makes everything taste a little bit better.
One of the ways I do this is to always do my best to use fresh ingredients, when available. A happy family, full of love, is a healthy family. I don’t use a lot of canned vegetables or sauces and I’m very choosy about the kind of prepared sauces I do use. As well as fresh ingredients, I like to use healthy ones like low fat milk, olive oil, garlic, and whole grains. I do use some of the unhealthier variety like sweet cream salted butter (in moderation of course) and a little salt. Most of the time, the food I cook for my family every night is not fancy, but what it lacks in class, I think it makes up for in flavor.
No matter what the quality of the ingredients I use, I have noticed that if I’m crabby or if I rush through making dinner, the food comes out plain. If I am experimenting with a new recipe or creation that I’ve been mulling over in my mind, I have to be care full that I’m emotionally prepared to cook it, or it will not make the family favorite list. What I have learned the most about my cooking, is that if I pour some love into the batch, I always get compliments on what I’ve made. That also usually means that I have made a lot, since when the food is yummy, seconds are often requested.
The love I have for my family and the fact that I am content with my life (most days) is mostly shown in my meals that I serve to them and friends that eat here occasionally, too. This love and happiness inspire me to do my best to make the best meals. Therefore, I always try to remember to put a dash of love into my dishes. I find that love can sometimes make the most plain pasta and meat sauce taste so good that just thinking about it while I write this makes my mouth water. And I must be doing something right, because they don’t call me Mama Yum-Yum for nothing!
