Corydon Indiana is a seemingly rural town that can be deceiving. Corydon is rich in history and has some very unique and captivating attractions in and around the county of Harrison. Corydon is a picturesque rural community that sits in the southern part of Indiana, really not too far from my homestead in Kentucky. The history of the town dates back to the American Revolution, but in my opinion one of its most unique claims to fame is Daniel and Squire Boone’s Caverns. I remember watching Daniel Boone on television as a child and I truly enjoyed the connection of the caverns when I visited the town and my childhood fascination with the frontiersman.
The Squire Boone Caverns was discovered by Daniel and his brother Squire Boone back in the late 1700’s. Squire Boone was a lot like his brother a true famed frontiersman of Kentucky and Indiana. He like his brother Daniel was a hunter and explorer. Squire fought in the Revolutionary War and almost died several times. He later settled in the area with his wife and sons and when he died they laid him to rest in the caverns that he and his brother Daniel had discovered.
The Squire Boone Caverns are located at 100 Squire Boone Rd in Mauckport, Indiana and are open almost year round. Anyone can easily find information about times, directions and discounts on their website. Prices for the cave tours are approximately 15 dollars for adults to eight dollars for children. There is a village that features a grist mill, rock shop, mining for gems, bakery, and soap and candle making. The village is quaint and reminiscent of years gone by and the caverns are breathtakingly beautiful. I remember I was struck by the warning signs about people who maybe faint of heart such as pregnant women, heart conditions, etc. I think the cavern staff were trying to make sure that anyone visiting the caverns were indeed healthy and physical fit enough to take the tour, since there is a climb, bridges over water and if I remember right somewhat at times tight quarters. After all the group tours are can be fast moving and you need to be able to keep up and not get left behind. The caverns are lighted in a beautiful array of colors and I remember the water was exceptionally hypnotic.
Other sites around Corydon include the alpacas at Flatwoods Farm which is located in New Salisbury, Indiana. Flatwoods Farm has a huge herd of alpacas and the owners have been raising them since back in 2001. There are products that are made from alpaca fiber and it the farm makes a great family attraction. The staff is very knowledgeable and everyone comes away knowing a great deal about the business of raising alpacas and the enjoyment they have brought the owners as the years have past.
Another worthwhile attraction in the area is Best Vineyards Winery located in Elizabeth, Indiana. This place is quaint and quite tasty if I might say. They have a large array of wines and will give you a tour of the facility. The winery is open from Tuesday through Sunday from noon to 7 p.m. They also have a large list of events each year at the winery and a full listing is available on their website.
