We all know that those plastic grocery and store bags aren’t really great for the environment. We also know that we really should take our own bags with us when we are shopping. Yes, there are some small things that we can do to reuse these bags. But overall these bags just aren’t that great.
They just basically end up in the many landfills across our nation. We all know this deep down.
This is the reason why many states and cities are slowly beginning to place a banned on these plastic bags. The city of San Francisco had a banned on these bags. Now to follow in the city’s footsteps the entire state of California is trying to pass a banned on these plastic bags as well.
Of course, there are protestors that do not like this bill. They say it will definitely cause many people to lose jobs (those who are employed in making plastic bags). They are even showing commercials on television trying to get the ban stop before it is started. However, there are also many who are in favor of the ban.
What will happen if the ban passes?
No plastic bags will be given in any stores, except for those that hold produce and meats. Shoppers must bring in their own green bag or will have to pay a nickel a piece for a paper bag. The stores will get to profit on this nickel per bag.
Of course, the stores are behind this ban. Why? One reason for their enthusiasm may be that estimates say that this nickel per bag can average as much as $100 billion dollars profit a year.
What does the normal consumer think? If this was a ban that could go into effect in your city or state would you be behind it? Could you live without all those plastic bags? Would you be willing to pay a nickel a piece for a paper bag or would you just bring your own reusable green bag/bags with you when you went grocery shopping?
