A visit to the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida is truly a dream vacation for many families, but the expense of such a trip can quickly add up. One way to save money is to limit meals at table service restaurants in favor of the many counter service restaurants and food carts throughout the parks. However, do not think that this means your options will be limited to the standard burgers and fries that are typical of such eateries. Walt Disney World offers several unusual quick meal options that won’t break your budget. Although specific menu items may change, here are a few options that go beyond the routine burger and fries offerings.
If you have a hankering for all things smokey and saucy, then head over to Animal Kingdom’s Flame Tree Barbecue. Offerings include rib platters, barbecue pork and beef sandwiches, and a barbecue chicken salad served in a toasted garlic shell. Although fries and onion rings are available as sides, more unusual options are also available, such as corn muffins and baked beans.
You can find barbecue options in the other parks, too. Magic Kingdom’s Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Café, in Tomorrowland, serves rib platters, and at Epcot’s American Adventure pavilion, a barbecue pork sandwich is offered at Liberty Inn.
Who doesn’t love tacos? The offerings at La Cantina de San Angel in Epcot’s Mexico pavilion are especially a treat, stuffed in handmade corn tortillas and topped with fresh pico de gallo. Choose from grilled beef or succulent, marinaded chicken, both served with a side of lime and corn tortilla chips.
You can also find tacos at Magic Kingdom’s El Pirata y el Perico in Adevntureland. Here, choose from beef or vegetarian tacos, chicken or beef burritos, or the taco salad, and head to the toppings bar to customize your dish. However, keep in mind that El Pirata y el Perico is open seasonally, and is often closed during the winter months.
If you’ve ever wanted to feast like a medieval king, then don’t pass up the opportunity to try one of Disney’s infamous turkey legs. These giant legs have developed a cult following for their smokey flavor and abundance of meat. Due to their popularity, they can easily be found at every park. In Animal Kingdom, they are the main fare at the Safari Turkey Cart. In Hollywood Studios, look for them at the Toluca Turkey Company. At Epcot, you can find them at the Fife and Drum Tavern in the American Adventure pavilion, and at Magic Kingdom, head to Adventureland to visit the aptly named Turkey Leg Cart.
Sample the World
If you really want something different for your meal, head over to Epcot’s World Showcase. Almost all eleven of the international pavilions have a counter service restaurant or food stand that features culinary specialties from their home countries. In Morocco’s Tangierine Café, you could choose a falafel wrap with couscous salad, or head to Germany’s Sommerfest for a bratwurst with sauerkraut. From the cheese platters in France, to fish and chips in the UK, there are ample options for unique meals that are sure to please every palette.
