My husband loves pasta, and specifically egg noodles. He asked me to make a pot of turkey noodle soup for dinner last night, and when I was looking for noodles in my pantry I found a bag of Country Pasta Homemade Style Egg Pasta that he had purchased a while ago.
Normally I like to use the yolk free pasta because my husband has high cholesterol, but this time I decided to spoil him and serve him his favorite noodles for a change. I must say, the addition of the Country Pasta Homemade Style Egg Pasta in my turkey soup really made a difference.
My mother in law cooks with a similar pasta, but she buys hers in the frozen food section of a store in Colorado, and I have never seen them here in Alaska. The Country Pasta brand, made by Country Foods in Polson, MT, is very close in taste and flavor.
These egg noodles come in a large 16 ounce bag, and they claim to offer “Real old-fashioned pasta flavor like grandma used to make!”. Well, my grandmother did make her own egg noodles, taking the time to mix, knead, roll and cut them, so I know what real homemade egg noodles taste like. I wouldn’t say these are as good as homemade, but they certainly come close.
When I cook noodles that do not have the egg yolks, they cook up very quickly. Even the whole wheat yolk free pasta that I buy can be cooked in as little as five minutes. When using the Country Pasta Homemade Style Egg Pasta, expect it to take up to four times as long. The directions on the bag state to cook the noodles for 18-28 minutes in boiling water! That is a long time, and I almost didn’t have time to prepare these, but my husband was late getting home from work, so it all worked out in the end. But do be prepared for it to take longer.
The other difference is that when I make a casserole with pasta, I sometimes add it in with the sauce and bake it all in one pan. When using these noodles you have to cook the pasta first, then add it to your other casserole ingredients. The back of the bag has a great sounding recipe called Country Tuna Stroganoff Casserole, which calls for a creamy soup of your choice, tuna, cheese, mayonnaise, sour cream, milk, lemon juice and seasonings. It sounds amazing, and I decided I am going to make it for dinner tonight! If this tastes as yummy as it sounds, the price of this product will have been worth the recipe alone.
The ingredients in the Country Pasta Homemade Style Egg Pasta are: 100% durum wheat semolina, eggs, water and sea salt. The bag makes eight 2 ounce servings, and each serving contains 220 calories, 1.5 grams of fat, 0.5 grams of saturated fat, zero trans fat, 40 mg cholesterol, 95 mg sodium, 42 grams of carbohydrates, 2 grams of dietary fiber, 1 gram of sugar and 8 grams of protein. It provides calcium, thiamin, niacin, iron, riboflavin, and folate.
Country Pasta Homemade Style Egg Pasta are great to use if you like the taste of homemade pasta but don’t have the time (or desire) to make them. The noodles are thin but very thick, and that is why it takes them longer to cook through completely. Most of them are doubled over onto themselves, but they can be snapped into two smaller noodles if you desire. They do swell up when cooking. When my husband came home and saw the noodles in the saucepan cooking, he said it didn’t look like I had enough, but they ended up being the perfect amount, as they did swell up during the cooking process.
To conclude, if you like the taste of homemade pasta, I highly recommend you give Country Pasta Homemade Style Egg Pasta a try.
