“Three’s Company” told the tale of two female roommates and a male roommate in the late seventies and early eighties. The three fast friends lived in sunny California and shared an apartment managed at the beginning of the series, by Stanley and Helen Couple. An older man and his wife, the Ropers were not adverse to getting in the comedic hi jinks of the three twenty somethings and often added to the misadventures. If you are looking for a unique and fun costume idea for you and your guy this Halloween, consider dressing as the Ropers.
Stanley Roper Costume: The Stanley Roper costume is very easy and can be thrown together with items already in his closet, or by borrowing a few things from an older male relative or friend. Stanley dressed very conservatively for the time period in plain dress pants, a dress shirt with a plain white tee shirt underneath, and a cardigan sweater thrown on top. He had graying dark hair, so a few pinches of baby powder can be added to his hair to create the appearance of salt and pepper hair. He also frequently had a pair of eyeglasses on a chain hung around his neck. No Halloween costume could possibly be more comfortable, so he will absolutely love the comfort in which he enjoys the holiday festivities.
Helen Roper Costume: You will love the colorful and fun look of the Helen costume. She wore her hair in a short, curly style hair do. Her hair was bright red, leaning toward orange. If you want to exaggerate this fact, you can use orange temporary hair color to really make it look bold and bright. Use very small barreled curlers to give your hair that tight curly look or purchase a wig that resembles Helen Roper’s hair and make any tweaks that are necessary. She wore long, brightly colored mu mu style dresses in a variety of patterns. The wilder the color and pattern of dress the better. Comfortable sandals can be worn with the costume. A basic makeup can be applied, but be sure to pile on the blue eye shadow that was so popular in the 1970’s. Helen Roper also sported some very bright and bold costume jewelery including rings, bracelets, earrings and layered beaded necklaces. Pile on the jewelery and accessories and enjoy the swinging style of the seventies.
Fun Extras For Stanley And Helen Roper Costumes: Stanley Roper was the landlord of the building that Jack, Janet and Chrissy shared, and frequently had to visit the apartment to make minor repairs. Carrying a wrench or toilet plunger will go perfectly with the costume. He was also known for his wide, cheesy smile that he would give the camera whenever he made fun of Helen, so be sure to take a peek at an old episode of “Three’s Company” to perfect the look.
