Being a longtime resident of Hartford, Connecticut, I maintain an active interest in many facets of life in the city, including the schools that are located there. Recently, I had the opportunity to visit and tour Covenant Preparatory School, which is located inside of Hartford’s large YWCA building on Broad Street.
Since 2008, Covenant Preparatory School has provided male students in the fifth through eighth grades with an alternative to public schools and high – priced private schools. The clean and safe environment that this school offers, provides students with an atmosphere that encourages academic excellence, self discipline and personal responsibility.
Privately funded through individual donations, Covenant Preparatory School offers a well – rounded, tuition – free education that is taught by highly – qualified teachers, all of whom are actually volunteers. This independent middle school is specifically designed for boys in grades 5 -8, who are from under – served families in Hartford. Covenant Preparatory features a Head of School, a Principal and a Board of Directors that is comprised of local community and business leaders.
Covenant Preparatory School strives to provide its students with a supportive educational atmosphere, where they are encouraged to excel intellectually, morally, physically and culturally. The students at this Hartford, Connecticut school are selected based on several criteria. These include an interview, an admissions test, teacher recommendations and transcripts of grades.
The parents or guardians of students at Covenant Preparatory School play an important role in each student’s education. Parents or guardians of the students sign a covenant, wherein they acknowledge their commitment to the mission of the school and they are also required to volunteer their time and / or skills to the school, at various times throughout the school year.

The 2010 student body numbers 53 students, who are taught by eight full – time and six part – time teachers, all of whom possess a minimum of a bachelor’s degree.
When I visited Covenant Preparatory School in Hartford, Connecticut recently, the first thing I noticed was how enthusiastic and well – mannered the students were. Several times, individual students came up to me, introduced themselves and welcomed me to their classes. Wearing button – down shirts and ties, they were not only polite, but they also seemed to be proud of their school.
My tour of this top – rate educational institution was led by Patrick Moore, who is the Head of School at Covenant Preparatory. He explained that the school doors open at 7:00 am and the students clean the school at 7:30 am, followed by Morning Assembly at 8:00 am. Classes are held from 8:30 am through 3:00 pm, followed by sports activities from 3:00 to 5:00 pm.
The students then go home for dinner and return to the school to do their homework from 6:30 through 8:30 pm. The students do receive homework every night at this Hartford, Connecticut preparatory school.
As I toured Covenant Preparatory School, I noticed the state – of – the – art computer lab, the bright and energetic art room and the comprehensive science lab. Art classes, which are required at this middle school offer drawing, painting and clay work activities and the science program teaches physical science, biology, physics and life science. Every year, this Hartford, Connecticut independent preparatory school also holds a science fair, which is very popular with the students and their families.
Another component of this school that really stood out to me, was its well – stocked and expertly – maintained library. The library at Covenant Preparatory School features a broad spectrum of books and other media. Classics, current, popular fiction, mythology and curriculum – oriented non – fiction are just some of the categories of books that are stocked in this Hartford, Connecticut school’s library.
The librarian / mentor whom I met was very nice and quite knowledgeable. As with the Head of School, teachers and students that I met, I could sense the librarian’s enthusiasm for the school.
Sports are also a big part of the educational program offered at Covenant Preparatory School in Hartford, Connecticut. As mentioned above, the students here participate in sports activities each school day afternoon. A large gymnasium is featured at this school and students regularly participate in sports such as soccer, basketball, baseball, golf, cross – country and swimming.
High academic and personal standards are encouraged and developed at Covenant Preparatory School in Hartford, Connecticut. Fighting is not allowed and no name – calling or bullying are tolerated.
