In “Covert Affairs” Season 1 Episode 8 “What Is and What Should Never Be,” Annie finds herself on the floor of a warehouse, a gun close to her hand, a sprinkler system soaking everything in sight, and several bodies she cannot account for.
Then the police arrive, very annoyed. Spoilers follow.
Later, Annie is in federal custody being reacquainted with an FBI agent who last met her when she was using the identity of a call girl as a legend to explain once again being in the same room as a dead person. Then Joan shows up, annoyed, pretending to be her lawyer. No one believes that cover story for a moment.
But all Joan wants to know is why one of her people is in an FBI interrogation room hand cuffed to a table. Time for Annie to come to Jesus.
After a fashion.
A day or so ago, Annie was at an art auction when she noticed a painting selling for about $7 million more than it was really worth. That puzzlement was compounded when Ben, her old lover from Sri Lanka, showed up at her home to direct her attention to an auction house acquisitions manager who also happened to be one of his assets. Did we mention before that Ben had been a Company man and was now going rogue?
To make a long story short, some rather bad people were passing top-secret weapons diagrams using the packing material of expensive art. The acquisitions lady knows this, but is under the impression that Ben is dead. Before Annie could get her to Langley for a debrief, the shootout happens with some of the same bad guys, leading to the conversation Annie is having with Joan in the FBI interrogation room.
Annie makes one crucial mistake. She lies to Joan about Ben and his involvement. While Annie, as a CIA agent, is trained to lie with a straight face, Joan, with some years in the Company, has experience ferreting out lies.
After the usual threats of termination, prosecution for treason, but not, interestingly enough, termination with extreme prejudice, Annie is partnered with her FBI friend to find the rest of the arms smugglers.
Annie discovers a match book cover Ben had left behind with the address of a boat at a certain marina. Thinking that was Ben’s boat, Annie went forth to check it out. Surprisingly, instead of Ben, she found the rest of the bad guys. Lots of running and jumping ensued until Jai and some of the Company folks showed up.
Another ring of baddies have been stopped, thanks to Annie. But, alas, Ben has once again faded into the night and fog.
